When I read this article below,

2011 Spring Football Outlook: Quarterbacks - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

Here is what I got out of it.

Tiller has the potential to give us about 155 yards of passing per game.
Jantz has the potential to give us 256 yards of passing.
Capello and Barnette are unknowns at this point on passing yards to be expected,
but are were good passing QB's in hgh school.

Tiller, Jantz, and Capello have shown to be good at running the ball when needed. It is likely Barnett is a descent rusher also.

Jantz looks like a clear choice to for the starting QB to me, with a 256 yards of average passing.
Hopefully he can learn the system, and can perform under the crowds of Jack Trice.

Capello and Barnette will likely also compete for the starting job.
They are still relatively unknowns at this point and deserve a chance.
I did like that Capello displayed leadership in the Utah game when he led the offense to a score.

Tiller can manage a game, as he has displayed,
but I know that if we average 155 yard passing,
we will be lucky to win three games next year.

Explain your theory on the yards per game. I didn't see that in the article. What I did read was JT will start the spring #1 and it's his job to earn or lose....according to CPR. Now if that's just talk and him being diplomatic, how can we believe any if it. I'll just take his word on it.

In both the Texas A&M and the Missouri game last year Tiller had 155 yards in throwing. He was the starting QB in both games, and I believe he played the whole game in each.
That is what I am basing the 155 yards on.

I know he also played the entire Nebraska game from 2 years ago,
I did not look up what he had in that game,
which is not fair,
I would be curious to know what he had in that game.
I do remember thinking that the touch down pass he threw at the Nebraska game was up for grabs. The Nebraska defender did not do a good job, our reciever made the catch verses Tiller throwing a good pass.

Tiller threw a good pass. The DB was a little out of position, that's not all on the receiver. The QB had to get it there.

I'm cool if you want to break things down and make assumptions, but let's try to keep it to the facts.

It's not really fair to say that Jantz is the starter and that he will automatically throw for 100+ yards a game more than Tiller can - that's just ridiculous. Out of our receiving corps last year, we had 7 players that had at least 100 total receiving yards. Out of those 7, we lose 3 to graduation and 1 transfer; looking at the rankings out of those 7, we lose #1, #2, #5 & #7 receivers. Jantz/Tiller/Barnett/Capello can't replace the talent at wideout, it's up to the remaining receivers to pick up the slack. I thought Tiller had an awesome game against Missouri, only to look bad because his receivers didn't catch the ball. The QB position is going to make for a lot of noise, but if the receivers aren't being pushed to make plays then it won't matter once the season starts.

I know alot of you like to stick up for Tiller, which is fine. But why would we waste a WHOLE scholly on a JUCO QB for no reason if he didn't have a GREAT chance to start? You don't waste Schollys on JUCO QBS if you don't think they have a 75% of starting.

Two things: JT's numbers were against D-1 competition. Do you have a breakdown of Steele's game by game stats. I know his "average" per game.....but did he have some highs and lows? Some potential 150 ypg sprinkled in with 400 ypg. That still pushes his average to 250+. Im just asking. BTW, what AA average for a career?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Jantz is here to hold a clipboard. I just want to point out that the OPs assumption that Jantz will outshine Tiller is based on the statistics of Jantz throwing to WRs who won't be Cyclones, and also that the top targets for any QB competing for the starting job are mostly gone. This is as wide-open a QB race as it can possibly get. I just think it needs to be mentioned that regardless of which QB wins, if offensive production is still stuck in the mud, then maybe the focus needs to turn to the receivers.

Extrapolating stats based on past performance against significantly weaker competition. Interesting.
Nebraska isn't THAT much weaker!

All that I got from that article was some basic background, and the statement that the position battle is completely up on the air. Which I knew already.

Players improve or stagnate. They rarely remain exactly the same. I wasn't aware that Barnett had been hampered by injuries last fall, which would seem to me to slow his development, but hey, all that means is that the position is...up in the air.

We'll see what happens!

Zack Mettenberger, the #1 rated Juco QB in the country will not start at LSU next season. He will bring competition to the position and help make their QB play better as the case with "competition". But he will not play ahead if Jefferson or Lee. Eventhough their QB play was bad last year. Wasted scholly? I don't think so. Take the best players available that can help make your team better. There are more ways to do that than just being named the starter.

I don't think he'll just hold the clipboard either. I also don't believe he is ahead of guys who have at least a year in the system. And when I say system, I'm talking the entire ISU football and Cyclone community. Being at a Juco and being at ISU is a totally differently thing. Its an adjustment. He will have to outwork these guys also.

I don't believe "hampered" was the right word. We try to keep up with the Texas kids. He had the back injury at the beginning of fall practice and missed 4 weeks. He was back on the field in time to run scout the rest of the season and dress for the Texas Tech game. He also traveled to OU, Texas, and CO. I would assume that a redshirt "hampered" by injury would not make the travel list.

I'm just glad there's going to be more than 2 guys in the actual running competing for this job. There's usually the standard incumbent going into the season, and the 1 other guy that has an far outside chance...and thats it.

Bring on the competition! I also think it says good things about how Rhoads is finally building up the roster and can actually have a legit battle for the job.

I'm right there with you!

Anyone who is betting that Jantz is gonna storm in and take the job is nuts. Not saying he wont start at some point, but I guarantee you he will not start the first game of the season. Also, it's safe to say looking at ISU history is that the starting QB will probably be hurt for a couple games so we will probably see them both prove themselves in a game situation. Probably even Capello.

Give me Josh Lenz any day,
He does not drop the ball and will be an improvement,

These are the best stats I could make up,
70 percent of Stats are made up by people who just make them up in thin air
and are not very accurate.

I am just hoping we can get a QB that can throw the ball.
I am not convinced Tiller can throw it,
and we already have 3 running backs I would like to see run the ball.

Hopefully we can find a QB that will give us the passing game,
so we can see those wins we all deserve.

Jantz will start the first game of the season...you are wrong. It will be apparent early in the Spring.
