McGee named Jayhawk East Player of the Year
Putting together one of the top scoring seasons in the history of the Cowley College basketball program, sophomore guard Tyrus McGee was named the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division Most Valuable Player.

McGee, who has helped Cowley to a 24-7 record and the No. 2-seed in the Region VI Tournament, leads the Tigers in scoring (20.4 points) and steals per game (2.3), while ranking second on the team in rebounding (5.9) and assists (3.4). He leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.487) and was second in the conference in three-pointers made (109), free throw percentage (.865), and steals per game (2.3).

His 633 points scored rank as the eighth best scoring season in the history of the Tiger basketball program, while his 1,165 career points is only three points behind Louie Graves’ (1978-80) 1,168 points for third place on the all-time scoring list.

Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme was proud of McGee, who was named Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year in his first season at the school, especially considering the number of talented players in the conference.

“There is a pretty special group of players in the (Jayhawk) East, so it is nice to know what other coaches in the conference think of Tyrus,†DeSalme said. “This award is also a product of the team he is on because you don’t see players on losing teams win this award.â€

Fellow sophomore Dominick Cornelius was named an honorable mention selection for the second straight year as he is averaging 10.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and a team-leading 4.0 assists per game. He is also second on the team in steals (1.8) per game, as well as three-point field goal percentage (.396) and free throw percentage (.778).

“Dominick and Tyrus are two special sophomores and have been a part of so many wins,†DeSalme said. “They both do so much on and off the court for Cowley and love this place. There is no way Tyrus is MVP without “Domoâ€, that is how much he means to the team and to Tyrus.â€

Cowley will continue its season Saturday at 3 p.m. when they take on Allen County (8-22) in the second-round of the Region VI Tournament played at Wichita State University’s Charles Koch Arena.

Wow. .487 from three and 109 of them made. I don't think we'll miss JVB's three's too much.

With Mcgee, Allen, SC, and Babb, the opposing team better start gaurding us as soon as we get past half court.

I guess I didn't realize Mcgee was that good of a shooter. I'm starting to feel even better about next year, and that's hard to get my hopes any higher.

And we should actually have a low post presence too. I could see this team playing fast and getting lots of shots up.

Agreed, with this many threats from deep, it should really open things up on the inside for White, Booker, and Godfrey. My head is spinning with exitement:spinny:
 
On paper next year's team is scary good. I think they could even be better than the Fizer/Tinsley team. Only time will tell. Im hopeful........
 
We should be able to score in a lot of different ways, but what I'm really excited about is what should be an improved defense. Allen and Babb are lock down defenders. I would assume Booker plays tough D, as well as White. Godfrey and Ejim should improve greatly with a year of experience, and McGee's steal numbers are pretty impressive. Anyone know what his overall body of work is on the defensive end? I hope he has quick feet.

While White may be as talented as Fizer the huge difference is experience.
Marcus was good when he got he but he was awesome by the time Tinsley showed up. Time will tell.

Wow...I don't know about this, but we can dream, right? Don't forget just how good Tinsley was. He was one, skinny rebound away from a triple double in a Sweet 16 game against Earl Watson (who he completely shut down/frustrated the entire game) and a pretty good UCLA team.

McGee doesn't have to be JT for next year's team to be good, but a PG like JT immediately makes a team "special".

I'm excited about the defense as well. Should make all the difference when we need to close out a tough game.

I know. Tinsley is probably my favorite Cyclone. He was wicked. He made Fizer the player he ended up becoming. I dont think we have a "Tinsley" on next year's team, but we do have several very solid guards. We will have the ability to light it up from the 3 point line, OR take it down low and bang. I can only imagine Godfrey and White doing serious work down low. The sky is the limit for next year.

The difference is that JVB's threes pull an opposing low post player away from the basket. Adding another perimeter player won't do that--unless Royce White can stroke it from deep as well.

I'm excited too, but let's not get carried away here. We had 2 guys with legitimate 1st team all-american talent. We can't say that about anyone on next year's roster. White was highly rated out of high school, but that does not automatically mean all-american type play. Also, those teams had some GREAT role players like Horton, Nurse, Shirley, etc.

I am VERY hopeful that next year will mark our return to the tournament, but thinking we will be a 2 seed is a little crazy.

I love the enthusiasm but that Fizer/Tinsley team could have won the NC...let's not start throwing around expectations like that. Let's just hope we have a few marquee wins, make the tourny and maybe win a game or two. I will be head over heels happy if thats the case.

Couldn't agree with you more here. That in my opinion is why we'll miss JVB as much as we will. But the hope is that our incoming low post game will be so good that it wont matter if theres 3 defenders down low..they still dominate haha
 
I hadn't really given much thought to this kid and his potential impact on next years' team. It sounds like he could really be a fantastic contributor.

I like JVB, and I agree to a certain extent. But I don't think we miss him near as much as you think. He lacked much of an inside presence. Just because he pulled one big guy out of the paint, we don't take advantage of that too much. I think I'd much rather have three guys you have to respect from outside in gaurds, and two guys that can get it done one-on-one by themselves down low. The key is just having the threat from outside, so they can't double them down low.

I was wondering this as well, it sounds like he must be athletic and pretty active on the defensive end to have those steals numbers. Either way I think this kid is being brought in to put the ball in the hoop, I think he'll give us that for sure and hopefully the transfers can set the tone on the defensive end.
