125 - Finch, Jones
133 - Schlosser, Cash
141 - Mayfield, Goettl
149 - Weatherman, Mayfield
157 - Moreno, Weatherman
165 - Sorenson
174 - Spangler
184 - Ward
197 - Gadsen
Hwt - Simonson, Gibson

This is what I'd like to see and coaches are shooting for?
I question Mayfield to 141, Moreno to 157 and Ward to 184.
Would get us depth and fill a lot of holes. 133 will be questionable.

I have started to follow wrestling more in a the past few years. I don't follow recruiting too much but I have read all the bio's on cyclones.com for some of the guys we will see next year. How do you feel about that lineup for next year? If you had to guess where would you put their potential individual rankings for next year?

I don't think "rumored' is the word you're looking for here. I think you mean "projected", unless you have some inside information from the team or something.

Here's what I'd like to see next season, if a few guys are able to make some drops over the summer:

125 - Finch
133 - Jones/Cash
141 - Goettl
149 - Cozart/Weatherman
157 - Moreno/Weatherman
165 - Sorenson
174 - Spangler
184 - Shafer/Gadson
197 - Ward
Hwt - Simonson

With some solid back-ups in guys like Mayfield, Hawes, and whoever loses out at 149 and 157. 133 will still be a hole, but I think with another year under their belts Jones or Cash may not set the world on fire, but at least will be more competitive.

I don't like Simonson being so small! He gets throttled by real heavyweights.

I'm hoping either Simonson gains some weight or Gibson learns how to beat him

Zabriskie might want to have a word with you about that. Smaller, more athletic guys are doing very, very well at heavyweight in recent history.

What you have there is sweet, but there is no way it's going to happen.
A) Mayfield can't make 141 or he would be doing it now.
B) Weatherman can't make 149 or he'd be doing it now
C) Doubt Moreno can make 157
D) Ward has only recently shown the heart and conditioning to be able to make it through a 7 minute match. No way he makes it back to 184

Unfortunately, we are in for another "rebuilding" year next year.

Z had 20 pounds of pure muscle on this kid.

Have you watched any of kyle's recent matches? He's gotten beat by lesser wrestlers who used their weight against him.

"Rumored to be projected"

These are some of the cuts that coaches would like to see made. I think we have to get Moreno, Sorenson, Spangler, Ward and Gadsen in the lineup. That's the only way I see it happening. I think Moreno wrestled 160 in High school. 141 seems like a big cut for Mayfield, he seems lean at 149. Weatherman likes to use muscle, but think he gets outmuscled at 157. I like that lineup; just question the ability to make the cuts and compete over the long season.

Right now Simonson is not a top twenty wrestler, but he's just outside that level. I wouldn't disagree that he is getting outmuscled sometimes (maybe they'll get him lifting with the linebackers this summer...), but I think his problem is more technique than just getting pushed around by heavier guys.

Mayfield isn't at 141 because Drouin is suppose to be there
Weatherman isn't at 149 because Carr is suppose to be there

I wonder about Mayfield at 141, seems like a big cut; don't know about Moreno; but Weatherman is getting outmuscled at 157 and looks small compared to others.
As far as Ward, my only question is can we keep Gadsen healthy at 197. Ward looked better the last couple matches, but didn't show the improvement I thought he would by moving to 197.

Re: Weight cuts

I am sure the coaches know what's possible for each wrestler. I do think our best lineup has most these guys moving down rather than up. It seems to me that under Cael ISU had a tendency to move guys up in weight rather than have them maintain lower. This led to several guys (IMO Cyler and Mueller for example) being outhorsed. This certainly the case with Weatherman this year. On the other hand, this year we have bounced three kids up: Sorenson, Reader and Ward. The results have been good in two instances, not much change in the third. In the end, I'll trust the coaches to make these calls. Its a balancing act between enabling healthy performance and giving athlete's their best advantage on the mat.

But Drouin HASN'T been there most of the season. Since Mayfield has been a backup most of that time, if he could have made 141, he would have already done it.

And Carr hasn't been able to make 149 several times this year. As you said, Weatherman has been outmuscled at 157, so I'm pretty sure if Weatherman could make 149, Jackson would have already switched he and Carr.

Doing a slow cut of 8 pounds between March and November is very different than asking a guy who is probably already sucking weight that he needs to lose 8 more during the season. It's totally plasusible to project that Weatherman might be asked to make 149 next season. He's undersized at 157, so either needs to bulk up or trim down.

Under current weight cutting and certification rules, a guy can't just cut down to a weight. He can only do so much a week based on body fat testing. Drouin was supposed to be out a week and he's been out a month. I'm guessing that had they known Drouin would be out that long, they'd have had Mayfield make the cut, but even so, he'd probably only be getting there about now. The same thing goes with Weatherman. He can't just switch weights with Carr. I think we'd be a better team if he could. Of the cuts mentioned for next year, I'm most skeptical about Moreno making 157. I just can't see him having much of a gas tank on a one hour weigh in.

I have no idea whether the cuts mentioned are possible. It's nice to talk about and it at least gives us some optimism heading into next year. Even with that lineup, I'd say we're still a year away from being a heavy hitter in March, but we'll be a much better dual team. I see Sorenson and Spangler as having a pretty good shot at AA honors, and a lot of guys that can qualify and be right on the fringe. I think Finch and Gadson could be AA right away as well, but I'm fearful of setting expectations too high until we see them on the mat (see Weatherman this year.)

Other than Sorensen, does anyone see any of these guys being AA next year?

I don't wish to put pressure on frosh but Finch and Gadsen will both have a chance to make a push at NCAA's next year w/ the right draw. Gadsen beat a top 10 kid in December and I really think he will make Jerome drop or leave.

Cozart is another one who has a chance of success but in a difficult weight for frosh to AA next year.

We will be better than this year but it will take another year to replenish the roster and add depth and experience.

Hopeing for a transfer @ 133 next year but not holding my breath.

Sorenson, Spangler, and Ward I'd give at least even odds on. Simonson would have a legit chance depending on what he does this offseason. And who knows if Weatherman will remember that he's a good wrestler or if any of the freshmen that we have redshirting will pan out right away. We'll have at least two AA's next year, likely more.

That lineup does not inspire me in the least. And, furthermore, I highly doubt that is even close to the lineup we'll see. I just do not see those guys all deciding to make weight cuts. Maybe 1-2, but few more. Also, the thought of Ward at 184 again kind of makes me LOL.

It's going to be a few years before the coaches will get this program rolling again.

It is projected, I agree some may not work out; as long as you realize it may take a few more years to get the program rolling. If you accept that, I'm fine. I want to see improvement, replacing Jon Reader will be hard to do, but if we start to fill holes and see improvement in Shafer at 184, Weatherman at 149 or 157. I'll stay behind KJ. The year after next I expect to start moving to the top, soon than that is great.
