So I'm watching Dune, a movie of supposed critical acclaim, and i'm utterly confused/dissappointed. Anyone seen this thing? It's terrible. On a side note, I'm watching Dune on Netflix via PS3. This functionality is great in practice, but without shows that are worth watching (they don't stream all movies), it's not a compelling value, aside from The Office.

yeah, netflix needs to improve its library of streaming movies. its working on it, its a matter of hashing out the agreements.

If you read the book it will make a lot more sense. Very complex plot and I think the only way you can really appreciate the movie is if you've read the book a time or two.

My favorite is still the one filmed in the 80's with Sting.

Meh, i think that is usually the thought of the movie. THe book is good. Also netflix streaming is really really nice. Tons of great documentaries that are hard to dig up, some decent newer movies(pineapple express and step brothers were on there at one point) and then lots of old great movies. You really cannot knock streaming netflix.

I forgot about all the tv series. Weeds, Californiacation, Office, Pickers, Pawnstars. I think spartacus is on there. And Dexter. It is a great feature. I don't know how much I would pay extra for it, but I think it is pretty complimentary to go along with netflix itself.

Books are good, read them this summer...but I always loved Dune, even before the books.

Are you watching the original from the 70s, where they "fight with sound"? That is awful, and not faithful to the book. You need to watch the miniseries with Alec Newman as Paul, and William Hurt as Duke Leto. It is far more faithful to the novel, and just better done.

I watch them both (including children of dune) once every year, but I grew up watching the Lynch version. I always loved the sound weapons, and the desert scene where paul finds gurney will always be one of my favorite scenes of long lost friends reuniting. anyway, I like them both- somewhere there is a longer 4.5 hour cut of the 80s dune.

for the 80s it wasn't bad. we were starving for fun good sci-fi back then, and special effects were relatively new. take it for what its worth. i thought the characterizations in the movie were good.

the books are so complex, that it took a miniseries to do it justice.

I watched about 10 minutes of the Lynch version. Couldn't do it. Maybe I will try again later sometime.

I love the first book of Dune, probably in my top five books... but I couldn't watch any of the film adaptations for more than 3 minutes. IMO they are just terrible.

I haven't read any of the other responses, but Dune was roundly panned by the critics and often finds a place in everyone's list of worst movies.

It's the book that was critically acclaimed.

Haven't seen Dune so I can't comment on that, however, as far as Netflix streaming is concerned, there are a lot of good movies and tv shows available to watch, you just need to be willing to think outside the box to find some great hidden gems. Take advantage of the suggestions to discover new shows and movies that you might not have otherwise considered. We've managed to find a bunch of new shows, some of which I would consider amongst my favorite shows and movies.
