MLB: Berkman to Cardinals

Not a great deal in my opinion, last time he played all season in the OF, 2004 and played any signficant time: 2007. Add in the fact he wasn't that great defensively even then and with his age and injury history I can see this being something of a disaster defensively.

Berkman has not been great the last couple of years. Gotta say as a Cubs fan though, it appears at this point in time the Cards are trying to improve, and the Cubs are doing nada.

Just checked out the transactions report and really the only thing the Cubs have done is re-sign Jeff Baker to a 1 year deal. Wow. The team sucked this year, they might want to think about actually getting some changes made in the off-season other than at the manager and pitching coach positions.

They are putting Lance at first base and trading Albert.

Cubs offseason so far has been boring. Big holes at 1B, middle relief, and at least 1 or 2 middle of the rotation guys are needed. And what sucks is their rumored targets for all those spots are either aging guys or guys coming off injury that might come cheap.

The Cubs don't have the money. I think it's doubtful they do anything of note this offseason and future ones until the renovation deal gets put in place. The Ricketts overpaid.

Save the money, develop the talent, shed bad deals and go for Longoria in a couple of years.

You do realize that Longoria is signed thru 2016 right?

Those are the type of moves they need to make. Sign Pena and Webb and hope to get lucky with them. The Cubs most likely aren't going to compete next year, so it doesn't make much sense to trade half the farm for Gonzalez and then give him a 7 or 8 year deal on top of that. It's not worth it. Go with a stop gap for this year and then go after Fielder next off season when we have more money to spend.

I thought his deal was up after 2014. Unfortunately for the Cubs 2016 might be a reasonable rebuilding timeline.

Well he could be free by then but the he has club options thru '16 and Tampa would be foolish not to exercise them as they are quite cheap.

Good deal for the cards in my opinion. Not a ton of money for a good homerun hitter with lots of protection in that line up.

Granted, they now have the ugliest two corner outfielders in the MLB with Berkman and Holiday.

This definately isn't going to be Whitey Herzog's Cards thats for sure. Guys like this have usually found sucess in STL, hopefully Lance works out.
