If they don't have proof, obviously he should be eligible, but my worry is that they will later get the proof and do nothing because it won't be in the limelight.

They'll get the proof and later strip Auburn of their wins after they get beat by Oregon. It will be just like USC and Reggie Bush. Unless of course that whole tigerbait thing is true. Then Auburn will go down in flames and we won't see them resurface for years. If they don't have proof, obviously he should be eligible, but my worry is that they will later get the proof and do nothing because it won't be in the limelight.

Weird ruling today...they acknowlege the "shopping" as an NCAA violation but because they can't show that Cam Newton knew about it, he is eligible.
Interesting.
Auburn Tigers' Cam Newton eligible to play, NCAA says - ESPN
How does that even work. He passed the buck to his dad so since when is willful ignorance a valid defense?
George Lawson, an attorney who said he was representing the Newton family, told WSB-TV of Atlanta on Nov. 18 that he was "1 million percent" certain Cam Newton did not take any money.
Gene says please wait till 1 Feb 11.My guess is the FBI will have a cleaner solution. They will take Cam's dad down to send a clear and ugly message to the parents and handlers of these kids. I can also see some merit in that approach.
Aha, the old "I didn't know about it" defense...give me a break. Think I'll try that at work and see how far that gets me.
Absolutely hilarious the NCAA doesn't suspend an athlete for pay-to-play (even if it was done by his dad w/o him knowing) but will suspend Lucca Staiger for a year because he took NO money but played with guys who did. Or will suspend A.J. Green for 4 games because he sold his jersey for a few hundred bucks.
When will people start holding the NCAA accountable for this?
What about the "I'd like to play there but it's just too much money" comment? That was attributed to Cam, not Cecil.
So you want to deem him ineligible because he didnt take money?
No, the implication was that his Dad wasn't going to let him play for Miss St. because Auburn was offering too much money. If his Dad took money for him to play, then he should be ineligible. It doesn't matter if the name was Cecil or Cam on the envelope full of dead presidents.
Reggie knew about it.
BTW- This could be exactly like Reggie Bush as it tkes time to do the investigation and new evidence comes up in the future.
This. Good Message. No, it's a violation but not a suspendable offense.
Because obviously that is a similar situation. Besides that there is no proof the money was offered. There is proof that it was talked about and requested by Cecil Newton, but there is nothing that says that Miss St. was going to do it. I'm sorry, but I refuse to hop on the bandwagon of this thing without having some sort of eveidence that Auburn or Cam were in the wrong. Cecil Newton was in the wrong as far as we know. Just because our ex coach who some seem to have an infatuation with could be in some trouble doesn't mean we totally look over the severe lack of evidence in relation to Cam or Auburn. If it comes out and there is evidence that they were in the wrong, fine. Then I will have no problem running this kid through the mud, but right now I can't and won't do it. There has been a lot more harm done by running him through the mud in the case he is actually innocent than there will be good done by running him through the mud in the case he is guilty. Honestly, what if you are Cam Newton and you have never heard any of this stuff until this point? Is it really fair?
Where is this implication that Auburn offered money? I have not seen that. Also, what's this tigerbait thing? I haven't heard about that either.
