Grant Mahoney

i asked in another thread but got no answer.

what is the deal with guyer? isn't he on scholly as well? i thought they were brought in the same class both on scholly, and we've never used guyer, so he should have 2 years remaining since he wouldve redshirted once. is he that much worse then mahoney? it felt like i was watching shaggy last night. i told my wife before the chip shot-"he's got it in his head. he's gonna miss this." and he did. such a mo-killer.

The sad thing... Since 1999 I can remember every kicker we have had. And not because they were great, but because they sucked so bad.

Yank...
McKnight.. Mc Miss
Benike- he was decent
Shanky
No Money
Jensen

Seriously, they should be forgettable unless they kicked a lot of game winners or won an award.

I have seen this story before. mental not physical. I like Mahoney and I rooted for him but I do not want to see him kicking next year. A prohram that is trying to climb cannot afford an inconsistent kicker.

who's jensen and no money? i assume no money is mahoney

benike was actually a really good kicker for us iirc, but seems like he only kicked for 1 year?

I could be getting Jensen mixed up with someone else. I believe he was in the Yelk 6 years. And everyone was calling Mahoney "money" last year before the choke job.

Benike was only 1 or 2 years also.

Benike had a really unorthodox way of kicking where he came straight at the ball instead of striking it with the inside of his forefoot like 99% of kickers do. This caused him to kick extremely straight but not get any distance, he did not have range outside 40. He didn't do kickoffs or long field goals, if I remember correctly Yelk did kickoffs and long field goals the year he was doing PATs and short kicks.

Certainly good to have a high % guy but long field goals and kickoffs are huge too.

Mahoney has been muuuuuuuuuch better at kickoffs this year, he really strengthened his leg in the off season.

As much heat as Mahoney is taking now, he is our most complete kicker in the last decade. Yesterday was his first really bad game of the year where he missed makable fgs. Other games he hit some very long ones and missed some very long ones. Rhoads is certainly aggressive in the chances he allows Mahoney to take, under Mac he would have probably had 4-5 less fg attempts this year because we'd be punting for 15-20 yard net touchbacks from our 35-40 yard line instead of trying to make kicks.

Kicking is like hitting a golf ball. Very mental, but all about fundementals. Alignment is key. Watch the 2nd kick he missed. It was from the left hash, and he looked like a straight on kicker. I was watching in a sports bar, and as soon as he lined up said "$10 says he misses left". Could see it a mile away.

And why do we seem to have about 90% of our kicks from the right hash mark.

Couldn't agree more! Grant is in a horrid funk right now but I think he can shake it off and regain his confidence. He has been asked to make some difficult kicks (Nebraska for instance) and failed to get it done. The more you miss the more you start thinking about it and start to miss...its the downward spiral. He can be a totally different player if he can get his confidence back. Look what Kirby has been able to do once he started kicking with confidence.

I still have alot of faith in Grant.
He has littler consistency all the time. It is either right or left. He needs to spend all year kicking everything more down the middle. Looks like he has a changing golf swing. Maybe he can kick best above 60 degrees.

Kicking at this level had better be mental. If he needs to work on his mechanics at this stage of his career we have the wrong guy. You have to be tough as nails to be a kicker and boderline cocky and arrogant. Thats what we need and we don't have it.

I don't believe Guyer has ever formally red-shirted. He did kick off once in 2008.

You forgot Stephan Nash and Carl Gomez.

I was a backup kicker for my sophomore high school football team and I could have made that second field goal. Just sayin'.
