MLB: Jeter wins a Gold Glove

You guys are obviously not taking into account how much better he makes the guys around him. Do you really think that Cano or Rodriguez aren't going to try harder with Jeter next to them? His being on the field raises the level of play across the entire infield, obviously stats can't measure this, all I know is if there was an intangibles category he would lead the league every year.

It is a joke. Orlando Hudson won it over Brandon Phillips a few years back... even though Phillips had him beat in almost every single category.

Sure thing. Because when ARod has a hot shot hit at him, he's thinking, "I've gotta make this play because I want Jetes to be happy." Or when Cano is trying to turn two with somebody trying to bury him under 2nd base, he thinking, "can't let Jetes down...can't let Jetes down." What both of them is more likely to be thinking is, "I'm a better shortstop than him."

The Gold Glove officially became a joke the year they gave one to Palmiero at 1st when he played something like 30 games there and DH'd the rest of the season. Jeter having multiple GG's on his mantle serves to further reinforce the point.

Gold glove is NOT a team award. You appear to be describing MVP.

Absolute ********. It's about individual fielding performance.

You know, that'd be great - if that's what the Gold Glove Award was about...

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award, usually referred to as the Gold Glove, is the award given annually to the Major League Baseball players judged to have exhibited superior individual fielding performances at each fielding position in both the National League (NL) and the American League (AL), as voted by the managers and coaches in each league.

Rawlings Gold Glove Award - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Funny - in that entire description as to what the Gold Glove is awarded for, I see nothing about "taking into account how much better he makes the guys around him" or "teammates trying harder with Jeter next to him" or "His being on the field raises the level of play across the entire infield" or "stats can't measure his intangibles". What I read from the definiton is "best player exhibiting superior individual fielding performances." That ship sailed on Jeter a long time ago, if he was ever on that ship. Being a great team leader does not make you the best fielder at your position

Gold glove is NOT a team award. You appear to be describing MVP.

This. Absolutely 100%.

I have to hope that he was kidding about 'making people better'.

It was a joke before 1999. Ripken set a few fielding records in 1990 and lost out.

Just more bjs for Yankees...

Didn't read the article, but its been well documented that Jeter's range is less than ideal for the average shortstop, and there are stats that measure a player's range factor, and Jeter's has been near the bottom the last few years.

That being said, Jeter makes the most of the chances he gets.

Look it's a good thing people like you guys don't vote for this award. The baseball writers who vote get it. Without a gritty, leader like The Captain out there, the Yankees would be lost defensively. Jeter's love of the game, and his great fundamentals just rub off on all his teammates. He just plays the game the right way.

What are you talking about?! How does that matter in any way for an award based on individual defensive fielding performance?

LOL, What a joke. By most people Jeter is considered one of the worst defensive shortstops in the game. Cliff Pennington and Alexei Ramirez got the shaft. Have any of the Jeter supporters here actually watched him play? Compare the A's infield (0 Gold gloves) to the Yankee's (3 Gold Gloves) and you see what a joke the Gold Glove is.

On a side note no other pitcher had a chance after Buerhle's opening day play.

Jeter is just a winner. Think of all the clutch plays he makes in the field. Can you name another shortstop who has more clutchness than Jeter? I think not. Sometimes you just have to look past the statistics.
