I have been reading a lot of previews and looking at stats for all of Utah's previous opponents and I think all the previews so far are overestimating Utah's run defense. The only team Utah really kicked in the run game was UNLV who tried 42 runs with very little success. Everyone else (even Pitt) had mild success or better running the ball New Mexico and San Jose St. starting backs had great averages against Utah. And sacks along with the lack of a long run (30+ yards kept the Pittsburgh backs for looking good)

If Iowa State can leverage its size advantage to hold positions in one on one blocking and let the backs to get to the linebackers I think we have a great shoot at this game. We have a size advantage inside and Franklin is not a terrible blocker. Utah keeps going off about how there line demands double teams and has all these quick stunts etc, but when it comes down to it we still like to run the football and a run play has designed double teams and quick stunts open huge holes in the run game as often as they let someone come free.

I think if we line up in the pistol and motion Franklin inside like we often do Robinson,Johnson, and Woody can have a field day IF they run smart and don't dance. Take advantage of the formation, by that I mean the pistol is designed to give the running back a head start to the line like an under center formation, but still allow the QB to read the defense. Utah's line is to good to dance with run straight to the whole or the cutback lane and hit it. Once they are through put the pressure on there inexperienced middle. New backers starting and a true freshman at safety. We need to make them be the ones responsible for making the plays.

If we start off with the option read I will be very disappointed if Arnaud is not a 100% healthy as we need him to keep the ends honest and be a legitimate threat to run the ball. I think we also need to up the pace just a hair against Utah to not let them sub on the line. They talk about all this depth they have, but that means nothing if we don't let them sub.

Work off the run, but keep them very honest with play action slip plays where Franklin motions just like a run and slips to the flats or up the seam and throw two deep balls in the first quarter to keep the linebackers watching instead of moving and to have that freshman safety thinking.

Just my two cents I am by no means an expert, but I have been around a lot of football for a long time.

score more points than the opposing team.

Chop off the legs of there offensive lineman and use them as billy clubs on there QB.

Control the clock with our run game, and make solid passes like we did last week.

This. Exactly.

We need to control the clock with the run game. Hopefully Austen is healed up, and back to his usual running form. If we hit them with a lot of A-Rob and Shontrelle early, with some keepers mixed in, then we get them on their heels and hammer 'em with Woody when they get tired.

By the same token, I think we'd be more consistent on offense in our jet tempo. Kind of a Catch-22.

You can have a fairly up-tempo, no huddle offense and still kill clock. Look at the Colts. The only time Peyton Manning will take a snap before there are five seconds or less on the play clock is if he's spotted a mistake or massive mismatch. Granted, it's a different style offense and Arnaud is not Manning, but you get the idea.

Agree with this. We need to keep the chains moving and keep our defense fresh. I know Utah will want to run hurry-up offense like Tech did against us. We gave up a ton of yards to Tech when they ran their hurry-up, but ultimately what won the game for us was that long drive in the 4th quarter where Woody was able to get chunks of yardage and keep moving the chains to grind the clock down. A couple of long rushing plays will help, and I think Shontrelle has won himself some more carries to help with this.

Maybe you should write this post in Word initially and use the grammar checker. This post is not an easy read due to the mistakes in grammar and spelling by the OP. :policeman:

I don't know how good this Ute team is, but I will tell you I hope your coaching staff follows this advice. This team is very good against the run. I do worry about your TE because if they slip him behind the backers supporting the run he will have lots of room to run because the corners will be shadowing receivers. This is why I asked earlier in the week how good your TE is. He can do some damage.

As for the freshman safety, he is one of the hardest hitters on the team and saved the Pitt game with an int. One of those new backers led the nation in tackling after the first two games and only dropped because the other three moved up.

This defense is setup to stop the run, if you try to beat your head against it all night you are playing into their hands, but feel free to try.

If ISU is going to win, they are going to have to show a lot of improvement on defense. Even though they won last week, the Clones gave up a ton of yards and failed to get off the field in several long 3rd downs, including a 3rd and 20 on TTs first drive of the second half. They may have to blitz with Sims off the edge or something. Opposing QBs have had a completely ridiculous amount of time to throw.

We want to win, we can't give up 38 points again, which was the weak link last week in an otherwise perfect day. Another 200+ yards rushing would help. If we can put up over 30 points with some ball control, I think it'll be there. 31-28 Clones.
