Reception in IC..

This weekend will be my first trip to Iowa City for a game. Just curious on the general attitude of the hawk fans towards ISU fans and wanted to hear some of your past experiences. I dont mind a hostile enviorment, cuz when i hear **** talking, i love dishing it back out. Gonna be a good time.

A link would be nice, as 'Googling Penn State at Iowa' doesn't yield me any such thing. And Youtube has tons of videos of the game.

As for the OP, well it depends on where you are, who you're with and how drunk everyone is, TBH. For example, during the 2008 game, the ISU students in the Iowa student section drew a lot of directed heckling and boos and the sort. However, tailgating outside, at least from what I saw, consisted of more or less friendly jabs. Keep in mind, we were just a year removed from that 15-13 debacle, so that may have subdued some Iowa fans.

After the game, I don't really remember much.

walk with friends that are Iowa fans .... After the 'reception' my father and I had in 2004, we will NEVER go back ... all we were doing was walking down Olive Court to meet Iowa fans that are close friends ... we almost turned around and left.

Take most of the smack talk with a grain of salt, that is the fun part of the rivalry, but beware of flying objects of any kind coming from any direction if you are walking around.....

The last ISU-Iowa game i went to in KInnick was 2002. Our seats were near the Iowa student section and we were surrounded by Hawks. I kind of just kept to myself and watched the game...of course I got more vocal in the second half as we were coming back and the Iowa fans were turning on their own team.

My advice would be just try to have a good time and not run your mouth.

In 2002, 2004, and 2006 Iowa fans, as a whole, were TERRIBLE. We were pelted with a few beer cans, and a lot of verbal barbs. In 2006, one guy chucked a full beer at my buddy and I, and when it missed us, and start spraying a little stream, I ran over to the beer picked it up and chugged it. That really ****** him off.

In 2008, I didn't get an ounce of crap. Not one. I was stunned.

I'll be there saturday, and hoping for a repeat of 2008. It did help in 2008 that I spent most of my time at a tailgate where I knew 80% of the people. Still, I didn't get any crap on my way into the game or on the way out.

This is great advice. You will be out numbered and running your mouth usually leads to issues. Even after the game, win or loose, you will get heckled esp. when your back is turned.
 
I once had a, what had to be, 10 year old say, "wrong colors *******" to me in front of his white trash Hawkeye parents. All they did was laugh. True story.
 
haha ...its not good... I once saw a hawk fan take a rock and as the iowa state band was playing and walking to the stadium chuck it in to the band and smoke a girl playing the trumpet...and last time it was there i was walking to the stadium, I will admit I had one too many to drink, but there was a group of hawk fans screaming at everyone with cyclone gear on a 3 letter homosexual slur...well I noticed this and when they did it to me I snapped right back at them and a news reporter took a picture right as it happened. It made the Iowa newspaper and its probably the most classic picture to express a rivalry ever taken haha

and I mean that sincerely. With the exception of the outcome of the game of course.

All depends upon where you happen to be seated and in proximity to. I was in the midst of the Eastern Illinois contingent last week and didn't hear anything untoward directed at the Panther fans there. But that's different than Iowa State I realize.
 
My brother had a dislocated shoulder and was wearing a sling. A hawk fan came up in punched in the shoulder as he was standing in line because he was wearing ISU gear. He took it off and went without afterwards so he wouldnt get hit again.
 
95% of people will be fine. You'll always find an ***-hat who wants to do more than talk.

Also, went to the game in 1998. Had tix in the ISU section but some Hawk friends convinced my wife and me to sit near them in the Iowa student section. We did that for about a quarter of football. Had to move back to our original seats because I feared for my life. They were all nice until we started winning and it looked like the 15 year streak would end. We went back to our original seats.

Had a great time that evening though. Didn't hear a peep of smack talk :)

Haha we'll see how it is. After last year's beatdown and all the hype they create about themselves, i expect them to be pretty vocal. My issue has always been not bein able to keep my mouth shut hahaha so we'll see how that goes. The **** talking generally doesnt get to me though. Hopefully the player can shut them up for us.

2 years ago in Kinnick my husband and I were at the game (my hubby is Iowa fan) and I had a man behind me encourage his 12 year old son to throw his half eaten hotdog at the back of my head. The kid did it- got ketchup all over my hair. I thought my husband was going to KILL him. We have since vowed to never to return to IC for the game. On a good note that was one step closer to me converting my husband over to the good side!

but what is the hype that the Iowa team is creating about themselves? Iowa is ranked in the Top 10 not by Iowa fans, but by the pollsters. If the shoe were on the other foot, would you not be proud of that fact?

And yes, I would expect the Iowa crowd to be very vocal. I was shocked at how involved the fans were for Eastern Illinois, for a 11 a.m. kick. It will be a very good atmosphere Saturday.
 
Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I've never had any serious problems in Iowa City. A few people talked a little smack....some of it maybe a little inappropriate...but not too bad. For the most part I didn't talk back...unless it was to friends.

I was thinking about taking my kids to the ISU game last week but I was also worried about ISU fans response to me and my kids showing up wearing our Hawkeye gear. We live in Des Moines and the cost of going to the Hawkeye game is out of my range, but I wanted my kids to experience a collage football game just didn’t know how well we would be received. I root for ISU whenever they’re not playing the Hawkeyes, but all we have is Hawkeye garb. No offence but I really don’t want to go out and buy all new cloths for 4 kids.

Just wear neutral colors....wearing Hawkeye stuff is not a good idea.
