Space station flyover

Looks like it's going to take a lot longer than that to pass overhead unless I'm looking at the wrong thing. Right now there is only one thing visible in our sky, it appears to be far above average in brightness, and it's off towards the SW so I think it's what you're describing.
 
Cool, kids think its awesome, its still in the distant SW, how long for the fully flyover?
What you are seeing in the SW is either Venus or Jupiter, ISS was directly overhead at 8:17. It will flyover again tonight at 9:53, but farther NW here is the info:

You can see Jupiter in the NW Sky later tonight. I kept my son up late last night to see it. It's just a little east of the moon.

just saw it. really cool - thanks for the OP for the notice.

looked at first like it might be a plane, then figured it was the station tracked across the nw sky and then just disappeared - not like you'd think - it wasn't at the horizon - more like the middle of the northern sky - and gone.
 
Huh, we're up at the Boundary Waters in Minnesota and saw a very bright object go across the sky SW toward NE and couldn't figure out what it was. The other satellites we were seeing were not nearly as bright. It was likely the ISS then. Cool.

I'm not sure I'm getting your directions. The moon on Saturday would have risen in the east, just a little to the north if you were in Central Iowa. Jupiter would have been rising in the east just ahead of the moon, and a little south. I'm not sure how the ecliptic plane would ever get Jupiter to the North West, at least in Iowa?

On this past Saturday, the brightest objects besides the moon...

Venus- low in the west. Can't miss it, looks like a plane landing (except not moving, or twinkling). Easily the brightest object in the sky after the moon.
Jupiter- rises in the east, about the time Venus sets and will be next brightest object in the sky after Venus.
Arcturus- Star in the west above Venus. If you follow an 'arc' from the handle of the Big Dipper, the bright object is Arcturus.
Vega, Deneb, Altair- three stars overhead that form the Summer Triangle
Antares- Red SuperGiant to the south in Scorpio. Often in Iowa, only visible in Summer months. If it's center was in the same spot as our sun, it would extend out past the orbit of Mars.
Fomalhaut- to the south east

I did not see the ISS, but don't know that I was out before 9, I'm not sure what it's relative magnitude would be. Also, a lot of internet hoaxes going around about Mars and how bright it would be last month. Mars is around 1.5 magnitude, or roughly 300 times dimmer than Venus. You can see it though, a little orange dot just to the right of Venus.

You are correct. I was drinking at the time. I meant NE which is what it seemed like without having a compass and not really knowing which way was exactly North. I was sitting on a lake BTW.

No worries, just making sure you were really showing him Jupiter, and not something else, like Uranus.........:biglaugh:
