Another Student Death at ISU

Re: Student found dead in SUV

I'm curious if you saw injuries in another article or if you are just speculating? I haven't seen anything about injuries, just that no foul play is suspected.

Seems like a jump to assume because someone passed away that there were injuries that caused it. Young people can die of natural causes too.
Welfare check + everything locked = doubtful natural causes.

Re: Student found dead in SUV

Trend? No.

But this is most certainly alarming.

I don't see what's so alarming. There's roughly 30,000 students and how many have died in the past, say, 5 years? How many were due to foul play?

Welfare check + everything locked = doubtful natural causes.

You only lock the doors if you're going to harm yourself? I'd take the welfare check to be due to friends and/or family not having heard from him for some amount of time.

I just googled his name and found this

USA v. Lucas Rueben Farlinger
4:2009-cr-00127-RP-CFB-001
Des Moines - Room 265 - 2nd Floor
Jury Trial
Robert W. Pratt

Trial was scheduled to begin Monday July 26th. Don't know the charges or anything but maybe he was facing something not so pleasant.

Federal Courts website says the case referenced above is on three charges including Receipt of Child Pornography, and Possession of Child Pornography from August 2009.

^This.

ISU Police do welfare checks all the time. Usually parents aren't able to get a hold of the students for a long period of time so they contact the ISU PD to check to see if everything is okay. Doesn't at all imply anything other than the person has been out of contact and someone is concerned.

Could be anything to cell phone dying, to something more problematic.

Agreed. Seems like everyone on this board WANTS to believe things that are unconfirmed or just entirely untrue.

People still discuss how "wasted" John Lacina was, even though there was no evidence or testimony to suggest it.

Let's just wait and see.

Well to be fair to those posters, the toxicology (granted it probably wouldnt have done much because of the time span) was never released along with other details of the autopsy.

Re: Student found dead in SUV

we are still in the u.s. where innocent until proven guilty applies?

I didn't say he was guilty, just showing what I saw. I think it gives some key evidence towards the suicide theory...

A) I don't know how the police keep saying "No Foul Play" when at least 3 students all male all around the same age have died this year alone...not to mention the last few years.

B) ***Warning this is only what I have read*** but I heard the kid was facing child porn charges for some email that accidentally got forwarded with a 20 second child porn video in it and they were charging him for like 240 images of child porn because a 20 second clip is made up of that many individual pictures. Trying to make an "example" out of him or something. I just read this on the responses to the Des Moines Register news release. I have no idea if any of it is true.

Poor kid, it makes me sad that if it is a suicide or something that he felt so desperate that he had no way out other than to kill himself :-(. The dying needs to stop on this campus. Seriously.

It's sad that another life had to end. However, in regards to the bolded, in a city of 55-60 thousand, where about half of that population is the university, where the age population is 18-23 year olds. It's not surprising that this demographic sticks out. In my opinion, it's not unusual that these deaths appear to be in the 18-23 year old age range in the Ames area.

Again, it's sad that another life ended.

Part B of your post answers the question posed in Part A. Based on what information is out there, the odds of this being a suicide seem high.

That said, this is very tragic.

Welfare Check. Facing trial in federal court next week. Locked apartment. I don't think it is a huge stretch.

I feel sorry for his parents. It's too bad the guy couldn't see beyond what he was facing in court and think of them and their love and concern for their son.

I grew up in a chicago suburb with a far higher population than Ames and never saw this much death and the majority of the population there was high school age. It was a town people left once they graduated so you would expect to see a lot of deaths in the ages between 14-18 according to that logic and there wasn't. Also, there is more women than men here and yet the statistics are all male in the last few years aside from Raven. I'm not saying all the deaths are "related" or suspicious but I think it's weird they always say that when at least 3 of them are very similar and very fishy. And I'm not some crazy suggesting some stupid smiley face killers or anything like that... just I think there is something weird about it. Plus, our death rate is much higher than other Universities for some reason. I mean just look within our own state. Iowa doesn't have anything close to the amount of deaths we have...

Just weird. I don't know if it's murder, odd circumstances, etc. I just think weird and something more than your average death patterns.
