Classless comments from Iowa players....

The "Superbowl" topic is about as fresh as a Foghat concert, but here are my thoughts:

1.) Coach Mac knew the Iowa program better than any other we played each year.
2.) Coach Mac wanted to win that game as much as any other we played each year. (Maybe it would be fair to call it his Superbowl.)
3.) Iowa was generally not as good as Hawkeye fans believed.
4.) Suggesting a win over Iowa should imply an easy run through the Big 12 is laughable.

I never implied that a win over Iowa should imply an easy run through the Big 12. The last time Iowa beat ISU, Iowa was 4-4 in the BigTen - nothing to be proud of. But what I'm saying is that in 2002, ISU beat - and there really isn't any denying this - a pretty good Iowa team. Yet ISU went on to be embarrassed by conference opponents and faltered down the stretch.

It may have been Mac's superbowl, and who could blame him? You don't get the chance to coach against your old school in a rivalry game often. But if you watch the games, the ISU players clearly play much harder than they do for any other game. Or why else can you explain terrible losses (or close wins) to teams like Baylor, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, etc...?

I fixed it for you.

That's what I've always thought. Whenever ISU would play Iowa, they would look like a completely different team. I never understood how ISU could beat Iowa, but then finish the season with 2-3 more wins. Like in 2002. That game should have been Iowa's. But ISU played like no other, beat them, and kept the Hawks out of the NC game (probably).

That's the same team that was a blown call away from going to OT with number 5 ranked (I think) FSU just a few weeks prior. That team was 6-1 and ranked 9 with the unanimous Heisman favorite. And Brad Banks choking had something to do with that Hawkeye loss, too.

And I understand you're an Iowa fan, but don't be delusional. You wouldn't have gone to the national championship over Ohio State in 2002. And they proved that they didn't deserve it in the Orange Bowl that year.

You may have a point in 2005 because our team definitely got up for that game. Iowa was ranked 8 (overrated, but still a pretty good team), and we dominated the game.

I say the only way we're within three scores this weekend is if we win the turnover battle, and we don't leave any points on the field.

Ah, the old Superbowl talk. How I have missed it. Right now all I want our team to do is win A game. Just one. Iowa is our next chance. Hopefully we do treat it as the Superbowl. Then hopefully we treat Toledo as a Superbowl, and so on.

As for the comments about Iowa players looking up at the scoreboard and laughing at the score of the Iowa State game... WOW. Was he joking? If it's true, then they really don't care about this game right? It's just another game. Whatever. The Superbowl talk is just a built-in excuse if they lose. We all know that. It's just a simple form of denial.

Here's to an ISU WIN!!

Actually I don't think it has to do with any SuperBowl reference or any one coach putting 'more' emphasis on this game.

We are no longer intimidated by the UofI ... we relish the fact we won 5 in a row and want to keep the hurt coming.... the pain put on us with the 15 year 'streak' still runs deep, add that with us being able to whip up on 'em, come back from a deficit, holding a lead and winning in IC... we are no longer impressed/afraid/intimidated by the UofI or it's fans....

we KNOW we can do it, so we play with nothing to lose.

just the thoughts from a kid that grew up in CR during the 80's.

- keep.

But a lot of the players we have today don't know what that was like. It's nice for the fans, but I don't think the current players really care about the 15 game streak. The current coaching staff definitely doesn't.

Iowa beat ISU last year, and they were 2-6 in the Big 10.

I fixed it for you.

When did Iowa lose to Syracuse? They beat them the last two years, unless they played a few years ago and I forgot. Jason Manson tried his hardest to lose last year, though.

If Iowa wins and they gloat about it, how turdish. This cant even be a proud kill for them. I think they have a bunch of wake up calls coming for them. Them getting excited to beat us this year is like opening presents on christmas day and getting socks.

I think the 2002 collapse had a lot to do with the schedule. They lost to Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State, and Colorado in conference, and all were top 15 teams. Very few teams would have survived that stretch. I think we played 6 teams that year that at one point were ranked in the top 10 in the country with Iowa and Florida State also on the schedule.

Endless arguing each year about 'super bowl' comments and 'winning streaks' is one of many reasons why this series has run it's due course. Lame, predictable, and manipulated by the media so they can simultaneously hype and criticize the boorish behaviors as a direct result. Both teams would be better off scheduling other teams more suitable to their specific situation. They each have won some, let it go so programs can move forward.

The complete lack of goodwill from the extremists on both sides is bad for the state and a terrible role model for kids and those outside of Iowa. Since society seems incapable of reigning in the nitwits - see t-shirts, crowd chants, drunken abuse, etc, etc, - eliminate this social fiasco!

That makes my point even more relevant; they are NOT intimidated by the UofI and have seen our recent success and KNOW they can beat 'em. Not needing a SuperBowl reason to win...

catch what I am throwin'?

2002 = Seneca Wallace. Not that confusing.
The Iowa team that year had

The Outland winner (Gallery)
The Mackey Award winner (Clark)
The Obrien Award winner (Banks)
The Lou Groza Award winner (kaeding)

A Jim THorpe finalist (sanders)
And the Heisman Runner up (Banks)

Yes it is confusing...ISU played LIGHTS OUT in the second half of the game..They beat a very good Iowa team that night...FAIR AND SQUARE.

Got ya. Consider it caught.

``This is their Super Bowl,'' defensive tackle Mitch King said. ``They're always going to play Iowa good.''

Depending on the outcome of the game this is their excuse for ISU winning or Iowa not winning by as much as they should have. Because no matter the outcome they are far better than ISU and should have score more points and we should have scored less.

Kinda makes me feel better that they are already coming up with excuses for why we're going to play well against them.

Quiz time,
What did Dan McCarney, Bobby Elliot and Fabian Dodd ALL say Hayden Fry said about the ISU - ui game?

Answer: It IS the most important game of the season. You have to control your home state.

Two former assistants and a former player that played for both teams. They are all lying I suppose.

It's hilarious that it's even an excuse at all. If you, as a coach or a player, don't bring the required intensity for the game ahead of you then that's on you and shouldn't be used in a weak attempt to justify the fact that you just got rolled.

This would be an example of a classy statement. Nice job Blythe!

All talk
When Blythe was told Iowa players had been talking trash already, the senior did not fire back.

Iowa offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde said after the Syracuse game that he would ‘‘always hate Iowa State’’ and he and some teammates were laughing over ISU’s loss to Division I-AA Northern Iowa on the sidelines late last Saturday.

‘We’ll let other teams talk as much as they want in the papers,’’ Blythe said. ‘‘That’s not really our style. Iowa’s played two great ballgames so far. We are going to do what we need to do on the field.’’

Category please: What are they thinking now?

It wasn't until eight minutes left in the fourth quarter when we were really able to stand around on the sidelines and joke about it a little bit and point up at the scoreboard and say, look what happened to Iowa State,'' Vandervelde said.
``That was a lot of fun for us.''

Still havin' fun? :biglaugh:
