Why doesn't ISU use the nickel package?

My guess - they want to save it and spring it on teams when they're least expecting it? If they keep running a 4-3 base all of the time, maybe it will catch people a little off-guard with it? Or maybe they're just afraid of leaving themselves exposed to the run?

Thinking about it, the 4-3 does seem to stick out as the primary D under the McCarney regime. Of course on the old XBox, I to am partial to the 4-3. So I guess great minds do tend to think the same...
My virtual players must be really frustrated with me, then, because I'm always switching between 4-3, Nickel, Dime, and 5-2 between every play call.

That made me laugh. Now I'll be forced to imagine those poor little pixels scurring to the sidelines between each play.
Iowa State has never really used the Nickel that much. The only time I remember them using it was when Deandre and Ellis were on the corners and Hicks was used as the N-back. Other than that I don't remember seeing it last year or this year.

People I love ISU with all my heart, but our D will never be as good as last year. I went to every home game and guys like Dobbins and Leaders made me proud that ISU had a strength coach like McGettigan. We have to be real now, if ISU keeps it within twenty of Iowa or Texas's or Texas Tech's or Mizzou's passing game I'd be shocked. I hate to say it but these clones are destined for big things next year at best. 7-5 at best, I got my tickets for the Rhode Island Bowl or whatever bowl we go to.

I am starting to feel like I am watching the Iowa defense out there because they never get out of the 4-3 defense and that is why ISU has always been able to pass on them. The same thing has happened to ISU the last two games. At least ISU's run defense is good that is what we were really worried about going into the season.
I was more impressed w/the defense than I expected to be at the UNLV game this weekend - at least in the first half. And, with as many times as we let them into the red zone, I guess it's good that we held them to just one TD...
