Hey everyone... not normally the type to start advice threads but when trying to figure out where else to get my questions answered quickly... all i could think of was CF.

First off Im happy to say I finally stopped saying i was going to do it and actually started doing the P90X workout plan. I formed a diet that I wouldnt say is quite as strict as the one they recommend but I am keeping it to roughly 2000 cal/day.

I currently weigh about 210 on good day and Im 20 years old. Just really put on some weight after attending college and thinking that being Cy the Mascot would make me sweat enough to stay in shape. Im really social and love going out on the weekends and I jsut seem to be one of the guys who falls into the friend zone a ton so i figure I'd try and drop about 30 lbs this summer and hopefully come back in the Fall with some new found confidence and blah blah blah ...

anyway my questions.

1. any one go through the P90X program? what are your biggest tips?

2. What would be the best kind of "recovery drink" they offer one but i dont really wanna spend anymore cash (i am a college kid!!!) I heard chocolate milk is good but was wondering if anyone knew of any others?

Thanks in advance for any answers/words of encouragement!!!

edit: i just finished the 2nd day so things are jsut getting started

I have not personally done it but I have seen about 5 of my co-workers crash and burn because they said it was too hard. My advice is to find someone to go through this with.

it is quite the work out i made it through the first month and lost around 6 pounds. I didnt follow the diet plan but did follow the workout. I got to the 4th week which is the resting week and i just failed to get back in it. Now that is it nice outside again i just run. so maybe next winter i will give it another try.

Biggest thing I can tell you is to stick with the diet and don't stray away, not even for a weekend. The diet is about 85% of the whole plan and you will have great success. I started eating healthy for the first time in my life while doing p90x, I went from 175 to 158 in a span of about 5 weeks, and I know a good majority of that was just eating right. as for the recovery drink I just drank a EAS chocolate protein drink and that seemed to work out just fine. No need to give them anymore of your hard earned cash..

Good Luck on your venture!!

My biggest problem with P90x is you need to buy a pull up bar for a doorway and dumbells. My house isn't the biggest in the world and I don't want a pull up bar making my house look trashy. I know, I know, take it down after using it. Whatever. That thing goes up it is staying there for 90 days.

P90x sucks IMO. The guy is a psycho and the exercises suck. It's nearly impossible to do and it requires a pull up bar. I'd check out Insanity. The dude isn't a psycho, the diet and exercises are better, and you don't need anything but some open room.

I can't really say much for the P90X workout, as I have never done it before.
I do have some advice for the recovery drink, and the chocolate milk is a good one. However, if you are looking to lose weight, I would go with skim milk. Most bodybuilders and powerlifters will drink chocolate milk post workout, becuase it is packed with carbs and protein for putting on muscle mass and is relatively cheap compared to actual "post workout" drinks.
However, if you are looking for a true quick workout drink, you should go with a whey protein source, which is NOT dairy. Whey protein is fast acting and will feed your muscles when they most need it. Milk/dairy products, which is composed mostly of casein protein, is what you want to take before bed. It is slower acting and will absorb into your system throughout the night, rather than all at once quickly.

I'm back home for the Summer in Council Bluffs and I have a buddy doing it in Ames so we are txting each other making sure we do it!

I played sports in HS but was not the motivated type weight room wise so Ive had quite a few people (even family members:skeptical:) tell me they didnt think i could do it so I'm pretty motivated to prove some people wrong

yea the guy is totally a wierdo but it gives me a good laugh and room isnt an issue for me back home as we have a whole exercise room with plenty of it. Personally I like the workouts and they are kicking my *** but I'm getting through them so I like it.

A pull up bar takes, literally, 4 seconds to install/uninstall.

My wife and I have been doing it for almost 7 weeks, I've lost 28 pounds so far and gained a fair amount of muscle. Everything was crazy hard to start with, but now it's very manageable, albeit still difficult. Biggest thing with any program though is changing your lifestyle to be more healthy, that takes the most committment.

I was in pretty much terrible shape to begin with, definitely overweight, and I've never not been able to get through a workout, I modified a lot to start, but never stopped.

Biggest tip: Just keep going, modify what you can't do, but just do something.

P90X doesn't suck. It is hard, definitely, but it works. Do not take a day off if you can possibly help it. Just do everything they tell you and it will work. You will want to quit, or just skip certain workouts, but do them anyway. If you don't do it all right, you can just as well not do it. I would also say that in addition to doing it, if you could just run a little, that will also help. I did it for a month and lost 11 pounds. I quit doing it because I started working 6-10 everyday and I didn't really feel like doing it before or after. I also ran 3-4 times a week. Just a little, but I really seemed to feel better. As far as the diet, I didn't really do theirs. I just watched myself. I cut out pop and any other sugar first of all. Then I just watched portioning. I just didn't eat much. I didn't necessarily eat great things, I just didn't eat much of them. I will probably do the whole thing once work calms down. Again, I didn't do the whole thing but after just one month of it, it worked.

I think you can do it brother.

I completely cut out fast food, sweets, pop, chips, basically everything. It was hard at first but now the thought of eating most of that stuff just sounds crazy.

I found that it helps me a lot to track what I eat too, I use myfitnesspal.com to enter what I eat so I can see if I need to cut back, or eat more sometimes.

Holy Santa Clause ****!!! id like to take this moment to officially welcome another CFer on board. My own brother who took way to long to join the CF family. Now if we can just get dad to figure out how to do it:jimlad:

I've done about 3 rounds of P90x and have done quite a few of his 1 on 1's. For the last 2.5 months I've been doing P90x+.

Some have already stated it, DON"T MISS A DAY! Stick to the diet! When you miss a day repeat the week over. If you repeat a week over twice, start the round over again. That was motivation for me to not miss a day. It's hard to create a good habit and this is a good one.

I lost about 25lbs in the 1st 90 and have leveled out intentionally. I can see muscles I haven't see for years. I'm not quite as trim as I was after the 2nd 90 days but I'm content with what I eat and how I look and feel.

There is another thread on here with probably 12pages of p90x stuff.

At the end of the 1st 90days you'll feel like you really have accomplished something.

I also recommend getting on the p90x web site and learning more about diet and others successes and failures. The other thing I'd recommend, if you haven't done so, get on a web site that helps you count calories. This will help you understand appropriate caloric intake as well as your carbs, proteins, and sugars. I used myfitnesspal.com Finally, track your workout progress or as Tony says document it. There are several spread sheets available online. This helps you see your progress and challenge yourself each week.

Oh, and Tony's best on mute.

I did it last summer and did great! YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE DO IT WITH YOU. It is so easy after a long day to start the dvd and then click the button to stop and leave. Have a friend who is committed to start and finish with you. Also, diet is easy the first week because its new to ya and you are ready to do good but the second week is the hardest. Get through the second week then it just becomes habit to ya. Write down your goals. I lost 25 pounds for 2 months and I'm starting p90x back up again here next week due to my bday this week so I will be partying and eating out for all my friends. But I will do this for 4 months so when school starts next fall I will be better off than I was when I left. Good luck and Have fun being Cy!

h Coming from someone who has dropped 45 lbs or so in the last 9 months, the major key is diet. I'd say it's at least 80 percent of losing weight, maybe more. The advice on this site is pretty much spot-on Intense Workout - weightlifting, bodybuilding, weight loss, weight gain, routines . I haven't bought anything on that site, but the dude is probably 95% accurate.

To lose the kind of weight you are talking about and keep it off, you are going to need a pretty drastic lifestyle change. That means severely limiting fast food, cutting out or severely limiting alcohol intake (at least on anything resembling a regular basis), and eating a high protein diet.

That's the tough news. The GOOD news is that all it really takes is dedication and persistence.

also any girl that puts you in the friend zone because you've got a few extra lbs, probably isn't worth your time, but that's a whole different can of worms.
