How is our program now compared to when GMAC took over?

I know everyone is going to say he set the program back years, but really did he? I'd like to get your guys' take on how this program looks today, compared to the day GMac took over. I know the competition level of the big 12 is much better.

Like for example, the new practice facilities etc. What's your thoughts?
 
It's a wash IMO when you consider Stinson and Blaylock left. You have Boozer and Garrett now who will lead, but you don't have much else.

I think we're pretty much at the same level of suck. :sad:

No APR issues is a positive though.

How did the Arizona look after it was torpedoed at Pearl Harbor?
 
When you consider that ISU now owns Hilton, and ISU now has their own basketball only practice facility, and the team Greg took over won just six games in the Big 12, and next year's team won't win that many...I don't think that it's any worse off...and in important, long term ways, it's better off. Not that any of that was Greg's doing.
 
I think it's equivalent to freezing Hilton in a giant block of ice for 4 years and allowing it to dethaw today. We were just existing.

I am not so sure it is equal. When WM left the only turmoil in the program was due to WM's firing. Currently the program is in major turmoil because of what GMAC did in his 4 years as the coach. Now while a ton of the issues will be resolved now that he is no longer our coach the reputation of the program, the reputation spoken of by our former players, win/loss record, etc.... is in far worse shape. It is always important to have former players involved in the program but if you look at that fact we will have quite a few guys that had their experience at ISU ruined by this man and they will never come back. That is not a good thing and will take some serious time to recover from.

I'm sure glad you put that last sentence in there Jon. ISU owning Hilton and having a brand new practice facility have absolutely NOTHING to do with GMac... nothing. In fact, if GMac had stayed here, JP would probably had to eventually sell both Hilton and the practice facility just to keep the program afloat.

This question really shouldn't even have to be asked, right? This program is in shambles folks. It's really bad. GMac did no better for ISU than Lick did for Iowa. And that's not saying much.

Okay, let's break it down:


4 Years Before GMac arrived:
2002-03: 17-14 (8-10), 3rd round of the NIT
2003-04: 20-13 (10-8), 4th round of NIT (Semifinals)
2004-05: 19-12 (6-11), 2nd round of NCAA Tournament
2005-06: 16-14 (6-11)

Combined record: 72-53 (57.6%)
Combined Big 12 Record: 30-40 (42.9%)
Post-seasons: 3


4 Years Before GMac Left:
2006-07: 15-16 (6-11)
2007-08: 14-18 (4-13)
2008-09: 15-17 (4-13)
2009-10: 15-17(4-13)

Combined Overall record: 59-68 (46.5%)
Combined Big 12 Record: 18-50 (26.5%)
Post Seasons: 0



Yep. 3 post seasons to 0 post seasons. 57.6% overall to 46.5% overall. 42.9% conference to 26.5% conference.


I wonder which section of time was better.:jimlad: I could care less that we have a new basketball facility. Cool for recruiting and practicing but we'd gone to 3 post seasons in the 4 years before GMac had arrived. 0 since.
 
It is in far worse shape...far worse. This is not really even debatable. We have had pathetic conference records and no post season and with each day success in conference and post season play become more distant memories.

Ask yourself this, how old were the kids we are recruiting right now the last time ISU played in the NCAA Tournament?

Having said that, I am confident the right guy can turn things around quickly.

ISU always owned Hilton. It was just managed by an outside company. Sounds like part of the management of it will be returning to an outside company. Kind of silly to mention that, since it does not appear to have had quite the huge positive financial impact that many expected.

The practice facility is a plus that was not here under Morgan. In terms of player personnel, I think it is a little worse off than when GMac took over. Not sure about the status of the graduation rate, since we really don't know what status CB, MG, and others left in do we? That won't be known until this semester is over, I believe.
 
To add to what's been said here, we also have a new academic center which is considered to be among the best two in the conference. Without a doubt we are in a MUCH better position facilities wise. The W-L issues on the floor are much more easily fixable with great facilities.

As bleak as things have seemed, it will not be that hard to get back on track. I also believe that because JP showed the patience of Job with Mac, it will also help attract better candidates, which is something we didn't have when BVD canned LE.
