I'm with you on this. The obsession with "who are we considering" has always puzzled me. Unless you're in the know, you're always working from insufficient information, and you're just reacting to what's happening. All the uninformed projections of "we need X more than we need Y, but we'd settle for someone that has W and Z if we had to" are just background noise.
Best thing to do with recruiting is to wait 'til the smoke clears and then see what the staff collected for us. Problem with that: when you suspect that the staff is just as uninformed as all the amateur experts out there on the internet, then you worry about what the finished project will look like.
I would say that you are positively wrong. One only has to look at all of those empty seats in Hilton last year. I guess I am confused.... where were all of those people then? :wideeyed:
or until we win a couple of games this season and then they will be back singing the praises of the team like the fairweather fans that they are.
I don't have any problem with the basketball program keeping quiet about which recruits they are now targeting. In fact, due to their past failures I think that is a good move on their part.
But I do take issue with some posters chastizing others for "negative" posts that have supposedly driven away recruits. These kids are not stupid. They don't need message board posters to point out our win-loss record over the past four years, or the mad rush for the door by players at the end of every season. Even if they don't know realize it themselves, I'm sure other coaches are pointing it out to them.
Why should we be relegated only to comments that involve sunshine and rainbows? I'm mad as hell at what McD has done to our once-proud program. We need to continue to apply heat to him so that the administration knows that fans are not going to settle for the product that he has put on the court the last four years.
Fans who have put up with 4 years of losing and player defections are not "fair-weather" by any definition.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight..... We live in a world where people share their experiences, the good and the bad. It is called word of mouth. Word travels and it travels fast. Why do you think KG is on here chirping about how great the program is doing and how everything is moving in the right direction daily? It is because if he can get just 1 sucker to believe him then they talk about it with a friend, who tells a friend, who tells 2 friends, and on and on and on we go. Pretty soon everyone heard from a friend who has a source that ISU basketball is in great shape.
Let's face it... We are a society that likes to be led. We like to base our opinions on things based off of what someone else thinks or says about it. Hell.... a lot of the decisions we make are influenced by what someone else has said and not based off our own conclusions. You see a preview for a movie/ you think it looks good/ you talk to a co-worker who says they saw it and it was awful/ You more then likely decide not to go see the movie. We let someone's opinion trump our own because hell... it is easier to let someone make that decision for us. We don't want to make the effort to decide for ourselves. We take the easy way out because well.... it is easier then thinking it through and making up our own mind.
When someone tells me ISU is in great shape and heading in the right direction I compare that opinion with what I have seen with my own 2 eyes. Somehow that opinion and what I have seen don't matchup at all. So should I take the easy road and buy what kg is selling as "inside" information or should I make the decision based on what I have seen myself? For me.... I will trust my own judgement over an opinion that is strongly conflicted by a little thing called results. Just saying.....
Some of these guys want to believe so bad that our program is not as bad as it is, that they are more quickly drawn to people who are supposedly insiders giving these false statements of hope. I think Nurse could help, don't get me wrong. But to think that any of this is more then a distraction to buy more time is crazy.
Wanting to believe that things aren't that bad, is a choice.
U have no more FACT that 'insiders' info is false, as I do, that it is true..
sometimes, you gotta believe in something u believe in passionately.
Nurse and Grayer were hired because people in the know (not you or i) believe they can help us succeed, not as a stunt to fool people.
I choose to be positive as it gets you further in life (IMO).
You (and others) can choose to believe what you want, I just ask you to stop trying to bring others down.
Last year we had CB returning and we were thinking 17-20 wins and NCAA. Now we have few returning and we do not even expect 15 wins. It is a whole different boatride to next fall now as we know that with all the added players, it will take a real long time to build chemistry, probably until the following year.
If all negative comments were arbitrarily filtered, there would not be as many positive comments as we had last year with CB coming back and Gilstrap riding into town. Our big year was to be last year.
The biggest positive comments that can be spoken at this point is the new staff replacements. That produces only so many positive comments.
Just go back to last year and look at the thread excitement when Craig said he was returning.

It makes me want to puke how bad ISU basketball has looked on the court the last few years.
Craig's coming back last season may have done more to keep McDermott employed next season than anything else. It took all the heat off of McD last year. It gave us a reason to believe for 2009-10. Had Craig left after his soph campaign, I don't know if Pollard could have withstood two straight years of heat on McDermott.
No, we do not have any more proof that "insiders" info is false than you do that it is true. Honestly, it bothers me that there are even supposed "insiders" posting on here with the apparent knowledge and approval of the program. But that is another issue.
What we do have is that this program has not succeeded in the first 4 years, despite all the reassurances that the "insiders" tried to give us that everything was fine. What we do have is evidence, especially this past year, that no matter how talented the team is, this head coach was still not capable of producing wins. What we do have is probably player defection over the last 4 years that is as high if not higher than any other BCS team in the nation.
I hope that Grayer and Nurse are good hires. To be honest, I am skeptical at best. I think these are both capable men, but I have no confidence whatsoever that GMac will let loose with enough control of the program that they will be successful. I also think it is very possible that the Grayer hire is as much for PR as it is anything else. He could have been hired any time in the last 4 years when other assistants were hired. The timing just seems a little too convenient.

As far as trying to bring others down, I really don't think anyone is really trying to do that. Most are just stating facts about the program. Others seem to be stating fantasies and pipe dreams. Each person can choose what to believe.
This. You would think the ISU Men's Basketball coach would have better things to do then to have his "people" on here trying to spin all of their failures into excuses and laying blame on everything except the staff. I would like to think that our head coach has better things to do then to try and control the flow of information or the attitudes of a portion of the fanbase that post on a message board. Shouldn't he be working on fixing the program rather then breaking down issues being brought up on CycloneFanatic and formulating a gameplan to try and manipulate the facts of what is really going on?
For me personally... I know that everything that has happened (player defections, poor on floor performance, etc...) is not 100% GMAC's fault. Then again it seems that he would have you believe that 0% of what has happened has had anything to do with him. We are working on 22 player defections and a sub .500 overall record in 4 years folks. There is no possible way that the head coach of a program with those results has had no hand in them. Wouldn't it be nice for him to stand up and take responsibility for what is going on? I think that is part of the reason that I went from being supportive to being a very vocal "Fire GMAC" crowd member. Where is the accountability for this mess? Has the coach stood up to take any of the blame at all? Instead we are being force fed press releases from JP blaming this generation of kids and using BF as a human shield, press releases that seem to not accurately reflect the real reasons that players are leaving the program, etc... This is not how a D1 Men's basketball program is supposed to be run. Where is the accountability? Where is the plan to fix what is broken? JP's "state of the program" email was a fundraising recap with a fine print paragraph that ISU basketball is underperforming..... as if we hadn't noticed.
For me... I might be able to be converted back into the "wait & see" group if the people responsible for this mess would step up and take some responsibility. I don't think it would be a bad thing for GMAC to stand up and say you know what.... I haven't been doing a great job relating to these guys in the program and I am working on that, etc.... Let us know that you are working on fixing the problems that we all know exist but to this point they have refused to recognize. That would be a great first step.
This website has a nicely organized MBall discussion site and Google spends most of the day tracking our threads. CF is thus an open mirror to what is happening in the program.
That said, kids better make their recrutiing decisions based on the staff and not the complaining of CFers.
