Assistant coach rumor I am hearing

Yeah, because no other schools are smart enough to hire ex-players to be assistant coaches. It'll give us a real edge.

Grayer: "Look guy, I played here. It was awesome. You'll be a king on campus. Sure, you won't win much and won't know who your coach will be after your freshman year, but people will know you play basketball because you're so tall and that'll go a long ways around here. I'm black, too, in case you hadn't noticed. Did I tell you I played in the NBA?"

Player: "Yes, and I told you I wasn't born when that happened. By the way, what were you doing prior to coming to ISU as an assistant."

Grayer: "Well, I was just fired for job performance issues. Thanks for asking. Are you ready to sign yet?"

While I disagree, that is pretty funny.

We know he doesn't have a ton of great experience. Here's the thing. Guys are knocking down our door. You can say he isn't proven, but just because he isn't proven doesn't mean that he is not a good fit. I don't know if he is a good fit. I don't have enough information. My point is that you are bringing in someone who has credibility as a big time college player and that can be perceived in a very positive light by recruits. It doesn't give us a leg up, however it may even a battle here and there if he is recruiting. Maybe he isn't a recruiter. Maybe he understand how to develop a position group and can help with the on the floor stuff. Maybe he is very approachable and the players can go through him to convey concerns. I don't think there are a ton of assistants out there who aren't specialists. They may do more than one thing, however they may be better at one than the rest.

the only SHRED of optimism I've had is hearing about Grayer but only given he can coach. I don't know anything about Nick Nurse, so I can't get "excited" about that, but if Grayer can coach I think it's a small reason to be optimistic.

I still think Nurse is a great hire. He has credibility in the fact that he has experience developing players and preparing players for the NBA. A kid who thinks they are NBA worthy will look at that very positively.

Decent points there. I think that what Bob is getting at is that Grayer's next employer might look at his involvement in our current program (obviously, assuming it happens) and be scared off, thus short-circuiting his coaching career at the very beginning of it.

That's a good point too, but I was thinking more along the lines of Jeff getting ****** at the fanbase when (not IF, I think that's a foregone conclusion anymore) GMac and all his staff get the heave-ho. I want to see him involved with ISU sports, but I want to see it done THE RIGHT WAY, not as part of a diversionary tactic to try and give GMac breathing room.

We lost our best possible recruiter in Daniyal Robinson. If McDermott couldn't convince DR (a native Iowan) to stay one more year in Ames, who is going to want to relocate to ISU for what very well could be a 10-month stay?

I'm starting to wonder about the departure of these assistants...perhaps they were "encouraged" to leave as part of a bigger plan...

Two assistants encouraged to leave...

Two well known Cyclones brought back as assistants (each bringing some good things to the table) to pacify the masses for a bit...

McDermott "resigns" sometime during the next two years and one is promoted to head coach...

Just throwing it out there, but any chance that bringing in Grayer would also get Darius Stevens to come here? I thought that they were close when they honored Barry Stevens last year.

Look, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The bigger plan is that Lebron is tired of the publicity of his free agency.. he is quitting the NBA and coming back to college as a player coach for ISU. Just waiting for the Cavs to be eliminated before they announce McDermott's firing. no worries on the buyout. Lebron is personally paying off McDermott.

it's like no one listens to my inside information.. jeez

A lot of what CYlent Bob is saying isn't really off at all. He's pointing out that our program is in rough shape (at best), and hopes that coming here wouldn't be a damper to a Cyclone legend's coaching career. That's a legitimate concern right there.

But, it's not like he's coming in as a head coach. He would be an assistant coach. How much do we really hear about the assitant coaches? Plus, he doesn't have much to speak of, from a coaching standpoint, so we could only help his coaching "career". Grayer has nothing to lose in this situation at all, regardless of how it works out...

If the program magically turns around, Grayer gets hailed as the addition that did it... if it continues to tank, still on Mac.

no lose. you're right.

But when GMac gets the axe, all the assistants will walk the plank with him. Jeff Grayer included. No new coach wants to get saddled with the former coach's "leftovers", even if the assistant is a great "company man". So you've got to figure in that we would be hiring him with the almost absolute certainty that we're going to have to fire him within a year, maybe two at the MOST.

You're assuming that Nurse wouldn't be in position to take over for McDermott.

Based on his performance, I think you might be overestimating the "help" that GMac can offer Jeff Grayer. Unless Jeff needs to learn how to ignore team conflicts until they blow up in your face.

I've seen that movie, and it didn't really work out in the original version when Wayne took over from Larry. I see no real reason to pay for a ticket to see a pale remake of the original.

Doesn't always fail... Brad Stevens, Josh Pastner come to mind as assistants to do well after getting promoted..

Avoiding the same route doesn't always work. I remember after the Chizik departure, a lot of us wanted a proven head coach, not a coordinator, but we hired Rhoads, and that's worked out pretty well, hasn't it?

I think Clonehomer is on to something. I don't want to go down that road, but Nurse =/= Morgan.

People are ******** that the current coach has to go. This may be a way to ease into the new hire without having (as many) recruiting problems when the transition happens. JP signs off on the Nurse hiring with the thought that he is my guy if this season looks like the last for GMac.

I'm not saying this IS what is happening, I'm just saying it is a possibility.

I appreciate the fact that you guys are just "gaming" here & trying to anticipate JP's next move. My problem with hiring a guy with NO Division One experience in coaching as a "backup plan" if/when we have to fire our coach, is that we're admitting that coaching at ISU is essentially an internship. Heck, why not hire a talented high school kid to be our next coach? We could probably hire him for less than $50k, so we'd have PLENTY of money left for GMac's buyout?

If we're going to be a doormat, let's go whole hog and be the BIGGEST DAMM DOORMAT in the US of A! Nobody likes clown cars that only carry 4 clowns. Fill that damn thing up with 60 or 70 of them! Go big or go home!

I don't believe that Nurse is being hired as ISU's future head coach at all.
