McDermott vs. Jacobsen

That the people he recruited had great success and lastly for seeing Johnson as a diamond in the ruff..... that tells he knows talent!

Oh, I am sure he is happy for all of them, but there is no way he doesn't play the "what-if" game with himself. He has to wonder what kind of success he could have had if he stayed at UNI with these same players, and he has to wonder if Wes staying here would have helped him avoid this tumultious situation he is in now. I am not saying he is vengeful or anything, but he has to look at this tournament and be curious about what could have been if he had made a few different decisions.

Ben's style is EXACTLY the same as Mac's. The same offensive concepts, the same defensive concepts. The DIFFERENCES are:

1) UNI executes, we don't
2) UNI has tough players, physically and mentally, across the board, we don't
3) UNI has players with high basketball IQ's across the board, we don't
4) UNI plays hard at all times, at all stages, without question. There are 0 lapses in effort. I can't say I see that in us.

The gameplans are the same. The styles of play are the same. UNI is just better at it all. Call it coaching, all it players, whatever. Doesn't matter. UNI is just better. And Greg, the players, the assistants, everybody has to figure out how to fix it, asap.

5) UNI has good, "pure" shooters, we don't

Mac needs to get more guys that can truly shoot the 3.

- The seniors that he recruited to UNI are having a great deal of success.

- One of his former players just went for 31 points to take his team to the Sweet 16. Who? None of these players were ever actually coached by GMac....and no one for UNI scored 31 points yesterday.

All the while he is struggling to sign up JuCo kids beacuse he has had so many kids leave his program and he knows that he may be out of a job in the next year or two if he can't turn things around.

Grow up or shut up!!!!!!!!! He left for a new challenge just like anyone would do...not to mention the money a bigger school can pay. He had no control over Johnson leaving period. I will not post to you if you can't offer up facts for your opinions

Yes, it is quite interesting how some here on ol' CF want to give McDermott so much credit for UNI and their little run this year in the NCAAs but will fight you tooth and nail "explaining" why virtually nothing going on in the ISU program is his fault.

Memo to all. McDermott has been the coach at ISU for four long years.

After watching Jacobsen coach this season, I got to thinking about how it compares to McDermott. Both of their styles are to stand at the edge of the coaching box with arms folded and very stoic.....I am guessing Jacobsen learned this from McDermott as this was probably his first coaching experience. UNI's players are coachable, basketball savvy ,unselfish and play as a team...who is the McDonalds all american or the star of the team????? My hope is that with Brackins and Gilstrap gone that we will have better team play and meld into the coaching style that McDermott can work with.

Haven't looked at other responses but I have thought the same all season. Also think seeing a team that plays the way GMac coaches win might get some guys to buy in a little more. They see the results of buying into the system and playing together. Why they wouldn't understand that after UNI beat them, who knows. One thing for certain is Jacobsen learned how to coach from GMac and he will say just as much

I have stated my opinions and have used the facts that I have but he is laying it on everyone who is supporting the coach which is not what he wants. I'll add some more facts as I see them. I think he is getting some players that both are athletic and have an IQ in Christopherson, Vanderbeeken, Ejim and others. It sounds like Wilkins should fit this criteria. Hamilton was buying the system but lacked the athleticism

I understand wanting to look for some reason to have hope for us next year...we are all trying to do that.

However, it seems pretty clear that bringing the mid major model of program development to a high major program does not yield the same success in both settings. You simply have got to have the requisite athleticism in a conference like the Big 12 to compete. All of this talk of us being better next year because our two best players have left is really crazy in my opinion.

Some coaches understand these concepts and they are able to adapt their recruiting and coaching styles as they climb the ladder to fit their situation (see Urban Meyer) and some coaches just don't get it (see the MBB coaches at ISU and Iowa this past year).
