Updated Starting 5

I have a feeling that the starting 5 is going to change quite a bit between the start of the season and the beginning of Big 12 play.

Why do people always say that. Mac has never altered the starting lineup in 4 years. Why would next year be any different. Who ever starts on day 1 will start on the last game of the season.

Someone already alluded to it, but...let's be realistic. I don't know the starting 5, but i'd pretty much bet the farm that Phillips starts from day 1, and will be starting all year. There is no one else in this line up that's a Gilstrap/Brackins type of go-to player. There's gotta be at least one guy on the court who is a threat to score every time he gets the ball. The other 4 might be up in the air, but not Phillips.

Not true! At least one person will transfer or quit or get kicked off the team so that could alter the starting lineup... :skeptical:

But other than that, you're absolutely right.

I think KG is correct. Of all the newbies coming in, Ejim is probably the front runner for immediate playing time, if for no other reason than his defense.

Remember, a lot of these JUCO guys don't play much defense at all. Ejim is actually known more for his defense than offense. We are going to need some good defensive players on the floor somewhere? Dendy is a good shot blocker, Ejim sounds pretty decent defensively, and Scotty is not too bad. Other than that, we don't have many defensive stoppers.

Wilkins will not be starting at center is a 3/4 type of guy unless he gets a lot stronger

Let's hope that he's more of a 4 than a 3. We have plenty of guards/wing players that can fill in at the 3. We need someone that can play the interior. Right now we only have JVB and Dendy coming back. That is unless Ejim is a complete stud and can play the interior like W Johnson did early in his career. Personally, I think the starting lineup will look something like this:

Garrett - McDermott is a loyalist, perhaps to a fault
Christopherson - Good shooter, looked like a solid player at the end of the season when he got healthy
Ejim - Perhaps the only incoming starter
Dendy - He'll start, but needs to learn to stay out of foul trouble to see a lot of minutes. Should benefit from an offseason of work with Mac to improve his back to the basket moves.
Vanderbeiken - Really, no other choice. We may see him play on the perimeter to get Dendy some room.

Colvin first of bench. With the number of guards that we have for next year I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of rotation and increased ball pressure. Also, until Ejim is up to speed we may see some 3 guard rotations with Boozer starting at the wing. If Wilkins comes in and can play in the interior then perhaps move Dendy to the Center and let Jamie back up both C and PF.

In the end though, we better not be done recruiting big men for this season.

Looking at these potential lineups. How many starters do you see being better than the average B12 player at their position (top 6 at their position in the league).

The only 2 ISU players I would have labeled top half of the league at their position last year were Brackins and Gilstrap.

That's where a good coach comes in and makes the TEAM better than the sum of their individual parts. You see it happen all the time. Unfortunately, we do not have a coach that is able to do that so won't see it happen for us.

Actually good teams are good teams that play well together.. not average players that play well together. Having below average Big 12 players really does nothing to help you win (i know im captain obvious)
