SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -- One of the best high school basketball players in Sioux City has switched schools. Wesley Staten, who committed to Iowa State as a freshman, has left West High and transferred to Bishop Heelan.

Bishop Heelan head coach Tom Betz told News Channel 4 that Staten's last day at West was on Friday, and he was in class today at Heelan.

Betz says tranfser rules say that Staten won't be eligible to play varsity sports for 90 school days, but would be eligible the entire basketball season, starting later this year. Staten will be a junior in the fall.

As a freshman he averaged over 18 points per game, and increased his scoring to 22 points a game as a sophomore. Staten started last season by scoring 40 points in the opener against South Sioux City, and 38 in his second game at North. West had a 4-17 record this past season.

22 points a game in High school he is not the reason. He is going to be a very good player in that class of 2012.

ugh ... its **** like this that convince people catholic schools actively recruit. I try to defend them, but its hard when this happens.

Dude. Kids NEVER transfer between public schools. Duh.

I can't find the thread on Iowa Preps that said I was recruited. Damnit. :biglaugh:

Maybe its cause West is a piece of ****, poorly run public school... and Heelan has good academics and athletics. When you have a good school, you don't need to recruit.

yeah ... so why didn't he go there this season?

there's no way to make this look good - not that Heelan will have to apologize to anyone, but it doesn't help any private schools image.

like all the good football players that have gone thru WD Valley have grown up in the district.

There's a HUGE difference between transferring and recruiting. Transferring to play on a team that doesn't suck is a lot different than coaches placing calls saying, "Hey, we'd love to have you on our team!"
