NFL: Boldin on the market

Steal if he can stay on the field.... which he hasn't been recently. If you get him, you're going to have to pay him big, and he's an injury-prone WR bout to hit the downside of his career. I also believe he's very much a product of a system, imo, and is a very good #2 and a decent #1. He makes a living going across the middle of the field and going in motion to get mismatches.

Boldin is simply overrated, imo.

Guess the Cards will suck this year. Matt Ballroom Dancer Leinhart will be under the guin all year. Larry Fitz has not been quite as dependable lately either.
 
I don't know if he is a number 1 receiver, but not every team has a traditional number 1 anymore. He'd be a welcome addition to any number of teams. And the Cards probably are thinking they really won't miss him. They still have a good tandem in Fitz and Breaston.

Off the top of my head KC, Chicago, Buffalo, Carolina, and Miami all seem like decent landing spots for him. Seattle, St. Louis, and San Fran would also be good, but I doubt the Cards will send him within the division.

I don't think they have a choice where he goes. I think all they can do now to keep him is match the other team's offer.

No, Boldin is still under contract. He is not a free agent, restricted or otherwise. The Cards have complete control over where he goes. He won't become a free agent until next year.

Is that the case with all these "tender" situations or just some specific ones??

Tenders can only be applied to restricted free agents. In this case, the 3rd round pick that the Cards are talking about is what they will accept as trade for Boldin. It's not a tender. The big clue is that there is no such thing as a 3rd round tender. Only 1st and 3rd, 1st, and 2nd.

It's a good question, because I was confused as heck about it until I did some research. Basically, a restricted free agent is a player whose contract has expired, and has played less than 4 years in the league (6 this year because of the lack of salary cap). In this case, the player's current team has the option of extending a tender offer to him. There are different 1 year salaries associated with each level of tender.
For example, the assoiciated salary for a 1st and 3rd tender is something like $2.5 million. The Chargers put one of these on Darren Sproles, today. Because Sproles has an expired contract, he is free to take offers from other teams. By putting a 1st/3rd round tender on him, the Chargers have the right to match any offer that he gets within 7 days or be compensated to the tune of a 1st and third round pick. If no team signs him to an offer sheet, then Sproles will be paid the one year salary associated with the tender that the Chargers placed on him. In this case it would be $2.5 million, I think. Then, next year, Sproles would be a restricted free agent again, until he has been in the league long enough to be an unrestricted FA.

(edit. It looks like Sproles will earn 7 mil if he stays in San Diego. My numbers were wrong, but the concept is the same.)

I don't think it would be a good deal unless one of a couple situations plays out:

You're a team with just one or two missing pieces and are only really looking for depth in your draft picks. Otherwise giving up a 3rd rounder (which is one of the most dependable rounds in the draft) for a 1 year player doesn't really seem worth it unless...

Sign and trade. Get Boldin to sign a contract extension with the Cardinals as a condition of the trade. At least a two year extension locking him up for a total of 3. Then I'd make the deal in a heartbeat.
