The MBB situation leaves me stunned and humbled but not ready to drop a nuclear bomb, so to speak. I think our "bigs" have Big 12 talent and all our guards are in over their heads, with the exception of Colvin. If Colvin can develop a shot, remember he is playing in his third month of ball post high school, he shows some skills. McD can not waste another year with DG at PG. I am hoping post season that JP has a sitdown with McD and says: "you get one more year to produce". I remember when JP announced the hiring of McD, it was seen as a great hire and JP is no dummy-he knows he was his guy and the clock is ticking. Have you noticed that Gary Thompson is unseen and unheard the past two years? He was the main power behind the decision and I have not heard or seen him for a few years when he used to be high profile-this tells me something.
Thompson was very visible at the game last night in Lawrence.
Why should we be satisfied with McDermott? What has he done? There are plenty of more capable coaches who would love to have the Iowa State job. It's time.
Give me one good reason why we should keep McD? It has been 4 years and next year is not looking any better with us losing our 2 best players. We will have Zero scorers next year, we will probably be relying a lot on a freshman PF and everyone talks about how poor our guard play is this year, can you honestly see that improving very much next year? Cuz I dont, nothing in McDs resume makes me think he should stay, the best win in the mans career is at UNI last year. WOW
“The wins will come and they will come in bunches.†Anyone that can say that with a straight face should run for office. By saying this or agreeing with this, you believe that the problems in the MBB program will be corrected by the current staff. What are those problems?
Generally, this team lacks toughness. The best example is how many traditional 3 point plays we give up. We always seem to foul a guy just enough for the referee to blow his whistle but not enough to stop the basket. Start making opposing teams earn 2 at the line with bruised arms like other teams do to us.
Specifically,
- Player attrition. All programs deal with it, but it’s usually not the guy getting the majority of the shots (Wesley) or the guy that’s the #1 long-range shooting option (Lucca). Also, it is strange that in both situations, the coaching staff was “shocked†at their departures. I can see not knowing the mindset of a walk-on from Gilbert, buy you ought to be able to know when your key players are not on board.
- Passing. Our team passes like they’re afraid to break a teammate’s fingernail. This should be easily corrected, but it’s not. The problem is most teams can use playing time as motivation to make better decisions and better execution. See injuries and reason #1 for why we can’t.
- Timeouts. We let teams go on 9-13 point runs before finally calling a timeout. There is obviously an obsession with keeping 4 timeouts in the bank to extend the game in the final 4 minutes. I get the point, but the problem is you only need them if you’re behind by more than a couple of possessions. If you can stop a run earlier, you might not need them. Also, I think you tell your team, “look, we can’t call timeout because you guys are going to be behind by 8 with 2:00 to play and we need to stop the clock every chance we can.†Take the ISU-MIZZOU women’s game. Sisters were absolutely handing it to the Tigers…score was like 25-6 early and Missouri made ONE relatively easy basket. BF called timeout and got out his verbal chainsaw. Run over.
- Fouling. There may be a math problem on the coaching staff. Down 12 with under 2 to play, you can’t play one more possession of defense. You could if statistics showed you could get a stop and score on your next possession, but they don’t. You throw away 30 seconds and usually give up a foul or basket anyway. Start fouling earlier, then you can target your fouls at their worst shooters. My rule would be start fouling inside of 6 minutes when you are down more than a possession a minute.
5. Get T’d up early in a game at home. It doesn’t even have to be genuine anger...
channel Norman Dale and tell the referee his striped shirt makes him look fat,
anything.

I still do not understand this logic. Why are we wanting to give the other team points?
I am one that thinks this team could be better next year.
we dont have the money to replace him. let the man finish his contract and decide then. if his contract was up this year id say goodbye to him tho.
