New laptop???

I mean, in all honesty, you don't need to spend tons of money in my opinion. It might come down to screen size, and peripheral hook ups (i.e. USB ports), wifi, etc. Getting a $500 laptop for what you need to do might not make much more of a difference if you spent double the money. Just have to make sure you have enough memory in it (at least 1GB) and the processor is fast, along with the bus speeds being fast.


The thing is that, as long as you keep your computer organized for what you want, it'll be fine. That includes not doing questionable things online. Most security now is in social engineering on the web, and not really what OS you're running.

This is the best answer. Something in the $500-800 range. No reason to buy the top end, because it doesn't sound like you'll need to spend that much money.
 
Personally, I'd start with some "deal" sites, like dealnews.com. Dell frequently has online "coupons" for their outlet store, and Dell Financial just had a 25%-off coupon expire today (for off-lease computers).

That's just what I did two months ago - got a T400 with a few upgrades for $700 - I love the thing.
 
Here is the 14 inch that Consumer Reports Recommends;
Toshiba Satellite E105-S1802 (Win 7) - Retails about $800
 
I've always been happy with Dell laptops but I've been hearing a lot of good things about Asus laptops. I've always used their motherboards and have been happy. You may want to keep them on your short list.
 
Do not waste your time with HP laptops. Currently into 4 months with a Pavilion DV5. Been through on-line diagnostics with HP twice, been sent in for repair twice (still there). Some of the customer-no service people at HP are nasty! If it hadn't been for local support (Staples!) I don't know if I would ever make any headway with HP. Since Staples raised a bit of a fuss, HP started acting like they are somewhat interested in resolving the problem (wireless card dropping connections, blank screen about 80% of the time on start-up).

I did this over the past 7 months or so and Lenovo gives a pretty healthy for "friends" of the company. I bought an Ideapad Y450 (~$100 off MSRP) and couldnt be happier.

Although the ideapad may not be suitable for you thinkpad's are virtually bulletproof.
 
Our work always has had thinkpads, they are pretty good. I need to pick up a laptop sometime myself

Yeah...there's actually a W500 for $930...that is $839 off.


I remember my current laptop, an R61, I believe I got for $1200 off a few years ago. Of course, there's no such thing as an R61 anymore :)
 
I just wanted something for mobile entertainment, web browsing, some MS office stuff.
Are they still putting out T60's or that series?
