Watching Iowa State dominate Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison and the Jaysquaks in Allen Fieldhouse from 2/5/01. Shirley, Tinsley, Horton, Evans, Pierson, Sullivan, Power, etc... Is that team more talented than this years team, don't think so, but they have Senior Guard Leadership.

There is already a thread on this and you are way off saying this years team is more talented than that one.
Tinsley and Shirley both played in the NBA and Horton was a GREAT college player.

I would trade our entire team just to have Horton and Tinsley. The guard play from those teams is not even close to what we have now.

Having a PG that can actually finish would be a key addition to the current team. It would definitely improve CB's and MG's games as well.

Someone remind me why we fired this guy, and what was wrong with a coach kicking back after a game having a few brews.

I forgot about how excellent the help defense and defensive effort were on that team. That's definitely not something we are used to.

How soon you all forget....we had two great seasons out of five under LE, but the other three were pretty forgettable for the most part. For all the talk this week about ISU never having a player quit the team mid-season before, it happened on a semi-regular basis in LE's last couple of seasons, not to mention the national embarrassment brought on by his alcoholism.

I would like to see LE succeed at Southern Miss, but let's not our current program's troubles whitewash the issues that surrounded the program while he was here.

we know we know we know, but at least he had success! The last few years here have been pretty forgettable as well.

I had forgotten just how good a guard Horton was. All 3 guards (Tinsley, Horton, Sullivan) could shoot from the outside, could pass, could drive and finish, or drive, draw the defenders to them and then pass back out to the open shooters.

It was fun to watch Rancik and Shirley (especially Rancik) rebounding. Shirley was no Fizer inside obviously, but he held his own in there.

The other thing you noticed is the basketball IQ of the team, especially Tinsley and Horton. Tinsley pretty much did whatever he wanted, at will. Plus, he knew how to drive and get those guarding him to foul him. I would doubt that ISU will ever have a pg as good as him again......that would be tough.

TiVo'ing it. I'm gonna be really ****** if the TiVo acted up again and I don't get it.

I've thought for a long time that Horton was the glue that held that team together.
  • He was a true combo guard that could very effectively take over the point whenever Tinsley was out.
  • He could hit unbelievable shots (3's from the chicken) and knew when his team needed them.
  • He could defend, even players nearly a foot taller than him partly because of he was so sturdy (or stout?).
  • Finally it was clear when you watched the team that he was a great quiet leader. He often was a calming influence when things weren't going well (and not just by bullet #2 above).
I think that Kantrail was hugely underrated. He remains one of my all time favorite Cyclones. :notworthy:

The last two years weren't nearly as good as his best two, but those teams still played hard. Player attrition was a problem under LE, but no worse than McDermott's tenure.

The classic "what could have been" is what could have happened if LE's toughness could have been paired up with Wayne's recruiting. IIRC, Stinson, Blalock and Staple were signed and Clark was committed (in the next recruiting class.) at the time they axed Larry. That was the athleticism that LE needed to play his style of defense.

If only the administration had suspened LE when the pics first leaked to the Rag and sent him to rehab, everything could have been so much different. That season was going nowhere at that point anyway. ISU would have looked good by standing by a popular coach and LE could have been a sympathetic figure that could have stood in front of recruits and talked about lessons learned and not making the same kind of mistakes he made. What a cluster****. Great job by Bruce and Greg there.
