Big Ten Expansion - Texas?

Well, if every conference just expands to 16+ teams, then we can get rid of the non-AQ issue by just condensing to the 6 "BCS" conferences.

The interesting thing is if the Pac ten expands to 12 who do they take and if the Big 10 expands and takes 3 teams and ends up with atleast 1 Big East team then they can't be a conference and there aren't 6 BCS conferences anymore.

The weather thing is way over rated.

It all looks great on paper, but Texas won't come north of the mason-dixon past October to play. Big 10 teams would beat them at their home fields in cold November weather. Imo, no way Tejas goes. If they do, they are incredibly ignorant.

If I were Texas, I wouldn't want ANYTHING to change. They've had quite a ride in the past 10 years. They are consistently in the NC picture in football and have been a final-four type team many times in bball.

Texas would likely seek an invitation from the Pac-10 before they accepted an invite to the Big Ten. Texas has tried for a long time to associate itself academically with the likes of Stanford, Cal, and UCLA.

If the Big 12 does collapse at some point, I want ISU and the other remnants of the conference to ally with TCU, Utah, Boise, BYU, etc.

The problems that I see are:

1. Right now Texas is the Big XII. By just doing things the same way they have for years, they should be able to consistently get into a good, if not BCS, bowl game for football. Actually, right now, were it not for that sack in the fourth quarter of the championship game, we might be looking at a Texas team that is national champion for football. As far as basketball is concerned, they are number 1 right now...nothing else to say there.

2. $$$. They make about $125 million/ year. Money that they would have to share with other schools in the Big 10, but not the Big XII.

as far as the other reasons, I have to go to class now, but I'll post them later.

Texas would not want to share money evenly, they want it all and they are getting it all currently.

Yur right on big boy....texas will never leave the big 12 hellsbells they would have to take a paycut if they had to share all the revenue evenly with all the rest of the big 10!!!

Why should Iowa and Northwestern get the same money that Texas does when the Longhorns bring all the tradition and fanbase in the state of texas???

Texas has it made and knows it!!!

Huh??? You realize that schools in the Big 12 and Big Ten only share the revenue generated by the conference (mostly through TV deals and bowl tie-ins). They don't share the revenue generated by the individual schools (i.e. donations to athletic departments, marketing deals, etc.). In the Big 12, about 82% of the conference revenue is equally split. The rest is distributed based on television appearances.

Plainly stated, you have no idea what your talking about if you cite $$$ as a reason for Texas not to join the Big 10.

Texas owns the Big 12's revenue sharing contract, and thus generates far more from it than any other team, however, they still make about $14 million less per year than EVERY team in the Big 10. Yes, you heard that right, Indiana makes roughly $14 million more the Big Ten's revenue sharing agreement than Texas makes from the Big 12.

Plainly stated, the Big 10 generates more money than any other conference in the country, no school would take a revenue hit joining the Big Ten.

I assume your $125 million number comes from donations, athletic apparel, etc. No teams in the Big Ten share that money, that money stays with the school (as was pointed out above). The only money that is shared includes revenue primarily from television appearances and bowl games (of which, the Big Ten has a more lucrative line up than the Big 12) - and that revenue would increase for Texas if it joined the Big Ten.

The new conference name is "The University of Texas and all the rest Conference" or it could be shortened to The University of Texas Conference. IF UT would have 51% of voting priveleges with the above conference name, they are in.

Texas will not ....WILL NOT leave the Big12...

Oh, but what a beautiful sight it would be if they did. I am trying, but I don't think I can quite fathom the chaos if that were to happen. Sheer panic coming from the offices of the Big XII.

Just an quick question: IF it happened, would you guys blast the conference for not knowing how to count?

Just go away.

I am sure it wouldn't take the Big 12 21 years to get it right.

Link? (and not the blog with no evidence either)

This would be better for the Big 12 schools in terms of success than it would be for the Big 10 schools. In order for it to happen, TAMU would also have to go. Those 2 teams would compete well in the Big Ten. I wouldn't be at all surprised to then see a shift like what happened when the Texas schools joined the Big 12. The power slowly shifts to the south as some of the northern schools struggle to keep their sucess going. Probably similiar to what happened to Nebraska, although that was caused by more than just the Texas schools joining. I also think the Big 12 strength would shift north, depending who the 2 schools that joined were. Hopefully, that would also clear up voting to get a better revenue sharing plan in place with Texas out of the picture.

Yeah, that would just do wonders for the Big 12 TV markets, with the two (by far) most popular schools in the most populous state (and also the state with prime recruiting ground) leaving the conference. Money and exposure would drop, and the success along with it. The strength wouldn't shift north...it would shift out.
