Here is the response from the Ticket Office, which I thought was a good explanation although I still think it stinks:
We were only given $55 tickets by the Insight Bowl, we were never given any other ticket options. Tickets that you purchase from outlets like StubHub are from individuals reselling their tickets, so you are making purchases through those outlets at your own risk. Purchasing from the participating schools or the bowl itself are the only outlets to ensure legitimate tickets.
The $30 order fee covers the costs that Iowa State incurs to process your transaction, like UPS shipping fees, sales tax, credit card fees, etc. The total costs for most transactions are more than $30, so Iowa State is not profiting in any way from the fee, it is only applied to help offset a portion of the transaction costs. We have checked around with other bowl eligible schools, and many are charging fees in excess of our $30 fee.
Our entire allotment was for $55 tickets, we would never try to subsidize the total dollar amount we must pay the bowl for our ticket allotment by attempting to offset unsold tickets with a surcharge on sold tickets.
I also asked for a total number of tix sold so far, but no response there. Not sure why this isn't public knowledge, but oh well.
