In some places...you can fly out of Kansas City and St Louis for less than $400 round trip now. Also Denver Cyclones can fly roundtrip for as little as $150.

You are not helping my "Buy tickets and then never check Expedia again" plan!

Still can't complain too much if this is the case, we got the exact tix we wanted (fly out Dec 29 and fly home Jan 1 7:00 PM) for around $420 out of KC.

Honestly the fares aren't going to change by much over $100 either up or down. In the grand scheme of things is $100 really that big of a deal. Even for a family of four that is really the difference of $400. Put on a low interest credit card and payed out over 12 months is less than $40 a month.

wheres capitalcityguy to tell us the benefits and differences in leaving from kc or omaha as compared to dsm ... :jimlad:

right here...right here. Thanks for the shout out. Always ready to answer the call from my fans.

I'm not going to reiterate ALL the reasons it makes the most sense for anyone from central Iowa to fly out of DSM vs KC or Omaha, but I will provide my reasoning for doing so on this trip.

It is December. What price do you put on avoiding the chance that weather could cause you to miss your flight because you had to drive 2 -3 hours to the airport? Additionally, do you want your flight to go through Denver or Minneapolis (or similar)? Again...December weather.

In a perfect world, I would have taken US Air nonstop from DSM to Phoenix . $349 the day B4 the bowl was announced. However, supply and demand has those tix currently priced at a cool grand. (actually, not so cool). Instead, the right move is Alligiant Air from DSM to Vegas and then a cheap Southwest flight from Vegas to Phoenix. Cost B4 addl fees is about $650. You can't get anything currently out of KC or Omaha from 12/30 - 01/02 for less than $575. Add on the drive time, possible hotel the night B4 you fly, risk of weather on the drive to the airport, risk you take driving home 2-3 hours (tired, hungover? again, weather) ....just is not a worth it IMO.

I still have a couple of freq flyer tix that you could leave from DSM to PHX if interested. My wife didn't want to go, so now I have a couple available. 964 1838 if interested.

Wow….flights out of Des Moines 12/30 - 01/02 are now down to $535. Good news if you haven't ordered yet. Not so much, if you bought at 7 or 8 hundy.

Some of those flights were ridiculously long and most doable flights are way more expensive. Did book a flight out of kc yesterday for 560 and 3 nights hotel with 1 stop and 6 hrs total travel which was ok for us.

Yes, some, but if you're starting out in DSM and driving to KC, you've already added 3 hours travel time before you've even left the ground.

The $538 out of DSM currently on YahooTravel, is one stop. 5 hrs, 40 minute travel time (Northwest Airlines). The downside, you arrive late on the 30th.

this thread made me check allegiant air out of CR again. Leave the 31st come back the 5th around $400 round trip. Leave the 30th come back the 5th about $450 round trip.
