Anyone ever have canceled classes?

Yeah I remember the time that classes were canceled due to cold between 95-99. Jischke supposedly said he saw the morons standing in line outdoors at the bars that night and vowed to never cancel school for cold again.
Also remember a sweet ice storm before they put in the elaborate stair system by the MU garage. After the bridge crossing the creek between RCA and the MU there was a just a steep sloping sidewalk. After biffing it myself I gained solace in watching a few more people wipe out and slide down the hill. Watching people attempt to climb up was also entertaining.

We used toboggins to haul kegs. By Tuesday night there was not a beer to be found anyhwere in Ames. I drove from Oklahoma City to Ames on Sunday through the blizzard. It took us 15 hours to complete the drive.

I also remember in 1994 (January) it was -20 one day but it was the day before class I think. That winter there was ice everywhere and almost everyone on campus did the arms up in the air, fall on your backside move at one time or another. It was also when the path from Old RCA to the Union was a slope, before they put stairs in. It was interesting pulling yourself up the chains to get up the hill.

I remember living on Tripp Street for my 2nd cancellation. My roommate was going to go ahead and head to classes. He slipped on the corner, maybe sprained his ankle, and figured that was enough. He got back to the apartment, turned on the news, and class was cancelled.

December 2, 1991! All classes were cancelled...went to Beyer, blew my right ankle up playin' in a pickup game. On crutches for weeks all because of that dame snow day...

Twice.

Winter 90-91 due to snow. And Summer of 93 due to the floods. That wasn't a complete closing, they had a few AM classes.

I think I remember them saying something back then too, about ISU only canceling school so many times since the earth was new. I think it's a bit of an urban legend.

I had a final that day (a Friday?) that was cancelled.

Not knowing any better, I (along with others in the class) went to the office of the professor the following Monday and inquired about the status of the final. His answer was "it was cancelled - who wants to take it?"

People cleared out of there pretty darn quick.

Just once in five years. Sometime in the winter of 1981. The wife tells me it was just for an afternoon, back to classes the next day. About all I remember is going to the QuickTrip on Welch to buy beer.

I just got back from campus... It's a mess. Even if they started right now they wouldn't be able to get it all cleared. 2 ft. drift outside Black Engineering Building.

When I was up there I think they canceled classes for 9-11 but that was about it. But being an HRI major if it was under about 30 degrees and clear I wasn't going anywhere. Best part of being on a wired campus is that everything is online.

I think if I remember right we had classes canceled for 9/11.
actually they didn't cancel classes that day. Teachers were sending students home but all the classes were suppose to be held. I know because as I was waiting to go into my German class, another professor came by and told her class that class was canceled, and that she had to leave right away. She carpooled with someone from Ames lab and her ride had been told that they had to leave campus in case something happened. Kinda freaked us out, a bunch of people from our class decided then might be a good time to go home ourselves, unfortunately our professor walked up at moment and informed us the university is still holding classes including mine and anyone who leave will have this count as an absence. Still think it was kind of bitchy move. I think I will always remember that day, so many freaky things happened. I believe it was the only time I walked down my floor and heard news on everyone's TV, that was about the point I knew something major was going on.

Upon further review of my memory they may have canceled afternoon classes, just not the morning ones. 8 years is along time....

They are trying to have business shut down in Des Moines, so I could see them canceling classes at universities......

I think its stupid though. Just drive slowly and safely and everything will work out just fine!

Dr. Tyler isn't having class in the morning anyway - the last day was today. I for one am looking forward to no 8am!

Nary a one, 1983 - 1989. Neither rain, nor snow nor dead of night kept us from class back then. But then we did have to walk two miles, through two feet of snow, uphill both ways ...... :notworthy:

Reading this whole thread, it would appear I chose a good week to take the family down to Disneyworld. 83 degrees and humid today at Animal Kingdom and Epcot.

Although this will show my age,we had classes cancelled for two days the way I remember it - in April, 1973 there was a freak late heavy blizzard. The only sounds you could hear at night were thunder (yes, thunder!) and kegs rolling down the middle of Lincoln Way.....

The year was 1971 and it started snowing on Sunday the day we were all to get back from Christmas break. It snowed 15-20" and I think I'm right that at the time they said it was the first time ISU called off school. They didn't want to but probably on 25-30% of the student population had made it back to campus. Lived in the old Alumni Hall(Admissions building for you youngsters) and it turned into a 3 day poker marathon with classes canceled for 3 days. 1973 as others have said was the other time and we started classes on Monday but they got cancelled right after my 8:00 Bacteriology test. DANG!! Anyway we made tons of brownie points pushing profs out for the next 2 hours.

Yea back in spring '07 there was a bad ice storm that forced them to cancel classes on a Thursday afternoon. All classes after noon were cancelled...but IIRC we still had class Friday?

This is what happened. I was a senior, and we trudged to the bars Thursday night expecting to be able to spend all day Friday nursing our hangovers. Nope. They had classes on Friday.
