Bowl Game Charter or Not?

What’s the better options? To sign up and go on a Chartered trip for a Bowl Game or to make your own travel plans? I can see the charter being a bit more $$$ but I’d think everything would literally be taken care of from transportation, to lodging, to tickets, to even some of the food. Not to mention traveling with the likes of other Cyclone faithful who are along for the same ride. The only other drawback I can see is being constrained by the Charter's set travel plans. Booking your own travel plans may save you some up front cash but you lose out on several things that ultimately might be covered in the Chartered package. What are other’s thoughts and recommendations?

I've done both and you are exactly right. Chartering with CGC or Alumni Assoc is fun, but more $$ and it has to fit your schedule. Putting together the trip yourself will save money and offer flexibility. If you can make your schedule work, flying out on a 100% Cyclone plane charter is a blast.

When do you think information on a charter would be available? couple days?

Just looked at Allegiant Air and they offer a non-stop flight + car + hotel in Tempe for $770 per person....

That would sound about right, although maybe later in the week. Whether Gridiron Club or Alumni Assoc, they need to know where we go first, then they probably would work with the Bowl Committee in that host city to line up hotel, places for rallys, etc. The bus or airplane would be the least of the scheduling worries.

Gridiron club has already been making plans for both houston and insight (i heard preliminary pricing the other day), so id assume word would get out shortly once word is official.

Good.

I seem to remember previous packages having some options like pricing with travel and without travel. Does that sound familiar?

Cool. So you don't have tailgating budgeted yet do you? :-)

No but compared to what some other people are paying for flights and hotels, I think we're doing pretty good.

For just tailgating purposes alone.

Let's say we get 8 24 packs of beer. That is 192 cans at roughly 20 bucks each case. That's 160 dollars. 192 cans gets everyone 16 beers. That's 15 bucks for just beer per person. Probably another 15 per person to split food costs.

Still looking at under $200 probably after tailgating.

Now the bars would be another story . . .

I went to Shreveport & Phoenix past Bowl trips on my own planning. Way cheaper than a charter set up and making hotels, tix etc. is no big deal. Flew out of KC to Phoenix and drove an RV to Shreveport. Anybody who has traveled can do it themselves considerably cheaper. If you want the ease of having everything done for you all it takes is more money and some people are fine with that. The pep rallies. etc. can be attended whether or not you go charter. Incidentally, the pep rally the night before the Insight bowl last time was one of the most emotional Cyclone events I have ever attended.
