Picking Up the Blitz

The last two games, Colorado and Mizzura really gave us hell with the blitz. Not being able to watch the game on tv, it was really hard to figure out why we couldn't make them pay for blizting on every play. If a team is consistantly emptying their secondary, it seems like we should be able to nickle and dime them down the field. So what's up? Why is the blitz giving us so many problems? Anyone watching the games want to give me the run-down?

Colorado went press coverage on us when they blitz and we didn't get any separation. On a couple, we called plays that take time to develop, and Austen simply had to hold on and take the sack. When the defense sends 7 and we can only block 6, we're screwed unless a receiver gets open right away.

Press the WRs and blitz up the middle.... good scheme against ISU. When the WRs decide to separate from the DBs, we will have a field day with passing yardage.

-keep.

Yes.... that is right, they struggle getting off of the line.

We have got to get the QB and receivers on the same page. When they see a blitz coming (CU didn't even disguise it very often), they need to go to a hot route - get to the area that was vacated by the defense. Whether that's a slot guy or a TE getting into the area in the middle of the field, or even A-rob sneaking through the line, we need to get somebody out there. They should have time during the week to watch film and determine where the gaps are going to be.

A-rob has had two big plays out of the backfield (against Kansas, and maybe OKSt?), where a blitzer came off the edge, and he ran a little wheel route down the sidelines. I don't know if it was called that way or if it was a read, but those are the things we need to do to keep the pressure off of us.

+1 to all.

Hopefully this is something that we can work on in Bowl practices...I think that we all know that who ever we play in a bowl will see this and do it on every third down.

Another thing that would slow down this blitzing would be some draws or screens that make the defense pay for their over aggressiveness.

Doesn't this depend on what coaching adjustments are made to counteract the blitz? Are we getting too vanilla in what we run and are failing to take advantage of what we are given? I thought that was to be the strategy, yet it appears like our adjustments are not as great as needed. Certain plays like middle screens do not seem to be in our playbook anbd they maybe should. ARob and Collin Franklin need to be passed to more often in blitz situations. Is it our qb does not recognize it or is coach poroceeding on with his playbook?

Screens could be a great option with Arob getting the ball, but for some reason over the past 15 years it seems like we can never execute a decent screen regardless of coach or personnel. WR screens drive me nuts too, because our blocking receivers generally can't block well enough to spring guys for more than 3-4 yards.

Love me some screens, as long as ISU isn't involved on offense or defense...

And isn't that a big reason we go no huddle so our OC can look at how the defense is set up and then make an adjustment? Why else do we look over to thte sideline?

They also said MU was sending more guys than we had blockers.

That's right.
This puts the defensive backs in man coverage. It works if they can jam the receivers and keep them from getting any separation for a couple of seconds. In our case, our receivers can't beat that coverage and give Austen something to throw to.

A lot of this is a chemistry issue too.

We have no Brady-Welker, Manning-Clark, McCoy-Shipley connection where the QB and WR are always on the same page. The closest we seem to have is AA and Jake Williams but it doesn't look like the coaches want him going over the middle, which is where a lot of hot reads will go to on a blitz.

Something else to work on for the bowl game and heading in to next season...

If MU did that to Tech, Texas, (themselves), OSU, Baylor! or OU, those teams would probably have close to 500 passing yards. Good spread teams would absolutely tear that apart!

THIRD AND LONG! that's your answer. Man it seems like we get caught in a lot of third and 6+. Hot routes don't do much good then unless its a fade and that requires playmaking recievers.
The answer is to stay out of third and long.

+100

IMO, we need to be much more diverse and creative on first down. It's almost guaranteed we run it on first down.

When teams blitz AA, most of the time he panics and throws the ball to the first option...open or not. He has a terrible problem of not looking off his first receiver. When he is in a grove he does this much much better.

With a blitz, you don't have as much time to look at more than one receiver. you have a hot route and throw to the vacated area or throw it away.
