I am aware that you don't need a runner to run the spread. That's not what I am debating. Right now our offense is a LOT of zone read. The debate I was attempting to have is that to run that offense you need to be able to run.
Based on the guys we have offered to this point I think we'll see that continue. Of course it can change... but once again, then we are debating changing how our offense functions as opposed to whether a player can run a spread.
Saying something is a "spread" at this point is way too broad of a term. Right now our offense is a spread with the zone read. The "spread" at Texas Tech and Mizzou is way different than the "spread" at WVa. Both schools recruit a very different kind of QB to run the spread.
And I also don't think Arnaud can't pass. He can pass, we saw him do it a lot last year. I'm hopeful he'll get his accuracy back next year when the coaches and WR's get used to the offense.
You know, I'd have to think that between us already having Barnett, no word of him having an offer, and him wanting to come to ISU - if we were going to offer him a scholarship, we'd have done so already and he'd already be committed. It's possible the coaching staff doesn't think he's on par with Barnett or is worth another scholarship on a QB at this point.
It's also possible he's been offered a scholarship and has accepted. He may want to wait to announce until after playoffs.
Not if he greyshirts.
Why is it that just because the kid is 6'7, people think that he is a statue? Don't need to be a speed demon to keep people honest.
Actually looking at some of the highlights on the DMreg site there were some plays where he looked pretty athletic for his stature.
If he had some D1 offers for basketball, chances are he can move well enough to be a credible threat. He might not be a speed threat, but he probably isn't a statue. He just needs to put some lbs on that 6'7 frame or he will get broken in half.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think against Ames he had 300+ yds passing and 100+ rushing. That equals 400+yds total offense. I've listened to alot of his games on the radio. I would love him to be a Cyclone!!
I haven't seen him play and I don't assume that. Frankly I don't know anything about him. Other people in this thread are the ones who are implying he may not have the wheels but what do I know.
All I know is I trust our coaching staff a lot with the turnaround they have made and I trust they know who to offer and what kind of system they want to run.
I've seen him play and to me with his athleticism frankly he looks like a pro tight end. But if I were him I'd the weights and whey protien and make myself into a left tackle. Your life span in the NFL is far better than in the QB spot. Of course he'd have to put on 100-125 pounds to do it.
My concerns are actually height related - I would prefer someone in the 6-3/6-5 range. The videos on the DMR site show a mix of very nice throws along with a number of throws off the back foot as well as some awkward pushing the ball style tosses. The end result is some big time plays along with a number of throws into coverage and resulting picks.
He reminds me of a tall baseball pitcher who can throw hard, but struggles with control due to having trouble developing a consistent motion.
That said, he could potentially develop with a redshirt year and a couple of years to grow into his body while working with a QB coach on mechanics.

With Creekmur and Derby squaring off in the Dome, how strange would it be to see them square off on the second Saturday in September in 2014.

My guess is that the reason our spread is so centered on the zone read, is because we have a quarterback who is a very efficient rusher. My guess is if Brother Love (RIP) was still our QB, we wouldn't be running a zone read, even if we ran a spread.
I would find it much more likely that he put on 40+ pounds and end up a rangy hybrid tight end.
I'd like to see a few more "reads." When AA doesn't decide right away to run, he doesn't seem to be doing much scanning of the field, except on broken plays where he has made some unwise throws lately. If he can get back to his form toward the end of last season, we will be in nice shape at the end of this season.
The keys to the game are all passing. Can we stop their Alexander? Can AA throw accurately downfield? Either yes is likely to mean a win for the good guys. Both will make for a great December waiting for our bowl.
This caught my eye while reading through the thread. There is more to that decommittment from Iowa than most know. The way I understand it is that Chanse would try to contact the staff and they would not return calls. They basically pulled that scolly but made him look like the bad guy.
Apparently Creekmur is being recruited by ISU, Oregon State, Minnesota and others to play both BB and FB. I have doubts about that but this is coming from what should be a very good source. And, from the sound of it, very excited about the ISU possibility. Didn't mention the Hawks for FB but they hate Licklitter(sp?) so dschlitter is probably correct.
I also asked about Carlson but I'm a little fuzzy on what was said. I think he said he was getting looks from ISU but this was a little later in the night so I might be making that up.
