Barney Cotton Fun Fact

So a buddy of mine just suggested the Packers announce they're going to retire the #4 jersey prior to the Packer / viking game on Sunday, then hold the ceremony in honor of former QB Chuck Fusina!

I didn't recall that former Penn State QB Fusina ever played for the Packers, so I quick looked him up on profootballreference.com. For some reason I hit their hyperlink to the 1979 draft and paged thru it to see if there were any names I recognized.

The third player selected in the third round, #59 overall, Guard Barney Cotton from Nebraska to the Bengals. It was kinda funny to watch an agitated Barney on the sidelines during last weekend's game, so it seemed somehow meaningful when I chanced across him again in this manner. Thought I'd share the fun...

I am glad that BC is gone.

What I remember the most of him was at a Cyclone Tailgate/golf outing in Sioux City about 4 years ago.

Can't quote it but this is basically what he said when he was a coach for ISU.

I can't wait to beat the team southwest of here, I am talking about the University of Phoenix from Lincoln, Nebraska.

Of all the coaches that have came and went recently at ISU he was the biggest bust IMHO. The guy played on both offensive and defensive lines when NU was a power team. Then he comes to Ames huffing and blowing about how tough and mean his players were going to be. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiggghht.

I also heard his name once, and it was when he ran into his own teammate who was carrying the ball. Take that for what its worth.

The only problem I had with Barney is nothing personal against him or even Dan Mac, I just think it represents Dan's attitude. College Football is a fraternity, and good 'ol boys club, and he was going to distribute favors to good 'ol boys when he could. Heck, I can't say this is bad, just the way Dan operated and it ultimately was not what ISU needs to become the best. What Barney Cotton got was a big fat paycheck for not doing a whole lot paid by.....people like you. The ISU jobs-program.

Now PR I think has his heart and fight in this for ISU first. FFFB if you will: Faith, Family (and ISU is family), Football (ISU Football), Buddies and brothers of the coaching frat last.
Again, not bashing, just seeing how the two operate. When PR gets his family in place, PAY the guys so they will stay!!!! That coaching revolving door Mac had was nauseating. I hope he has guys who are assistants and want to be assistants...none of this over-rated upperward mobility junk for careerist self-promoters.

Marty Fine was by far the biggest bust. Cotton was pretty average, but Fine set us back about 5 years.
