Can someone explainto me why everyone (except us) are so high on the Hawks this year? They have 1 solid corner, and the other one will miss the first 2 games.....not even sure how good he is. I'll give them their D-Line, but their WR are average at best IMO, and their RB isn't really proven yet, even though he had some carries last year.

Tell me I'm not the only one thinking this way!

Oh....they have Ricky the Savior too!!

It's all in the neckbeard...

I see them losing at most 3 games, and that would not include ISU. College football starts up front, and they have 2 pretty solid lines.

Honestly, it depends on how well they run the ball. If they throw a lot of passes vs. UNI, look for less than 9 wins from EIU

If you are serious, here's the case for Iowa:
8 starters back on defense (all 3 linebackers, two good DE's and a very good backup DE, 3 starters back in the secondary)
Size, experience and talent on the OL
Good/great punter
Above-average placekickers
QB who is solid (didn't play well against ISU last year).
RB who averaged 5+ yards a carry last year and talented/unproven guys behind him.

Certainly doesn't guarantee anything other than Iowa has a number of guys back who played at a fairly high level last year. All 5 road games are loseable.

FYI, this probably belongs in the rivals thread.

What he said - and for the OP, it seems like most of the pre-season pubs are picking Iowa to finish around the middle of the pack in the Big 10. They're being mentioned as darkhorses to contend for the Big 10 title, but nobody (including Iowa fans) thinks that they'll win it.

When you average out all the preseason polls Iowa comes in around 20th. I would hardly classify that as an example of "everyone" being "so high on the Hawks this year".

Besides, you should celebrate a high preseason ranking for the Hawkeyes. The past few times they came in around #10 preseason they basically fell on their face.

Having a really good O and D line will automatically make you a very solid football team. Iowa will be VERY good in those positions.

I agree with you 100%.

Their QB is average at best. They have no backup QB with any experience. They lost their star All-American running back and replace him with a guy who has never carried the ball in game-critical situations. They lost their All-Conference tight end and they lost their best WR. Their fans point to that not mattering because their OL is "all world" or something. They were good last year but not great. And they lost two starters to graduation, a 3rd starter just had surgery, and a 4th is suspended for DUI. On defense they lost their two key guys in King and Kroul, and have no depth at all. Add in the fact that they play ISU and Penn State on the road, and the inevitable beatdown that will happen in Columbus since they don't dodge Ohio State like usual, and they look like a 6 or 7 win team. This year looks a lot like 2005 or 2006 for Iowa -- big preseason hype and expectations that end in mediocrity.

Wow- now theres something-Monty bashing on the Hawks again-I guess we'll see what kind of season we have in Iowa City-but I guarantee it'll be more fun than putting up with another 2-10 season in Ames.Keep up the good work Monty-its fun to read your asinine posts!

Jealous.

Just a few fact corrections for your enjoyment.

Hampton had nearly 500 yards rushing last season. While he may not have carried in "meaningful downs", he still has plenty of experience.

DJK was the leading receiver last year, so no - Iowa is not losing their best receiver. He returns this year.

Every offensive linemen starting for Iowa this year has started in a previous game, so trying to claim that Iowa's OL won't be good is asinine, especially since you tried to point to graduation of previous starters as one of your reasons. Iowa returns much more experience at this position than they lose.

Iowa returns Moeaki and Allen Reisner at TE - both of who should be very solid players this year.

Iowa has 3 tough road games - at Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State. ISU and WI won't be gimmes, but those are games Iowa should win.

Hate to break it to ya champ, but the Hawks have a very solid chance to go undefeated at home this year, and it's very unlikely that they lose every road game. So expecting at least 8 wins this season isn't asking too much, which means they'd go 7-0 at home and win just 1 on the road.

That's why people are cautiously optimistic about Iowa this year.

MontyBurns...

It is clear you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to Iowa. Jewel Hampton came into the game early in games all year. He was in there spelling SG early, not just when the games were in hand. I am sure you didn't know this as I would be, based on your post, you didn't watch Iowa too much last year.

Yes, we lose myers. But, we replace him with Moeaki who when healthy is a major threat in the passing game. He was the top 1 or 2 TE in nation out of high school, has been on the "BEST TE" watchlist past two years, and if he stays healthy will cause your crappy Linebackers hell.

Brodell was not the best WR for Iowa last year. That would be DJK who lead the team in receptions and showed way more play making ability then Brodell last season.

Despite our loses on O-Line, Iowa returns a ton of experience in both this year's projected starters, and their back ups. There is a reason why most "experts" are pegging Iowa's O-line as the best in the B10

Iowa has 5 guys set to rotate at the DT position and returns both starting DE's plus a stud backup pass rushing DE, All Linebackers and 3 starting D backs who led the Big ten in picks last year.

The difference between me and you, is I don't pretend to know about ISU and spout of nonsense as if it was fact.

When healthy he's a major threat? When has he ever been healthy. Oh yeah, high school. :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

I hate to break this to you, champ, but DJK isn't even in the Iowa 2009 starting lineup. Check your own depth chart if you don't believe me. But to his credit, he might be the #1 underperforming internet legend in the nation!
