My goodness people were going on and on and on about him...and I will admit the kid passed the eye test without pads on. Looks like he has hit the weights hard. CPR said he thinks he can be a special player, and OC Herman echoed that.

I like CPR,good down to earth guy. One word kept going through my head when he was talking, and that word was 'teacher'. You can tell he is good at that, and loves it. I was impressed by Herman, too. I am looking forward to seeing this offense. I asked him if we were for sure going to see the spread from game one, because many felt two years ago ISU was headed for that only to not believe what we saw against Kent State, and he smiled and said absolutely.

OL is huge...will have wider splits this year. WR's looked like a herd of gazelles..impressive.

Still the question remains; can your front seven make exponential improvement from being borderline atrocious to just being slightly below average. That would be a huge jump...because if they can, and if the offense does not have injuries, this team can win six games this year, IMO.

But the lack of depth on offense was a common refrain I heard today.

lack of depth on offense? I guess I figured the offensive side of the ball was ok as far as depth, except maybe the OL.

And I forgot to add, Arnaud is among my three or four favorite college players I have had the chance to interview and speak with over the years...he is just a great, and very respectful person. That, and he liked the old TV show ;)

Just repeating what CPR and OCH (Offensive Coordinator Herman, in case that acronym has not been used) were saying.

Where is there depth besides receiver and tight end? No other position has a second string with experience. Dont you dare tell me that Bo is experienced because he went to Florida. The kid has not set foot onto a college football field yet.

Thanks for the input Jon.
I think part of ARob's appeal is what he brings after the whistle and off the field.
You are right about the front 7. The defense does not need to be good to have more wins- just a ranking around #60-80 would give them a chance at bowling. Improvement in the secondary should help get the ball rolling (no touch-football TD's), but without better play up front, it may not roll far enough.

Also, until proven otherwise, O-Line play is always a concern.

AA said something about Rhoads being a good guy, but it sucks he went to Ankeny.

I wasn't questioning you, I was just surprised by the quote in itself. I figured the coaching staff would be a bit more worried about depth and even talent on the defensive side.

Better question, can the other D-lines keep up.

I have always got that vibe from Austen. The way he carries himself, I picture him as a sideline reporter or anchor on some sports show in his future. Just comes off as well-spoken, likable guy.

Jon, did you get a chance to interview James Smith? I've seen pics from today's media day and that man is cut!! Very intriguing story he has, especially after reading that article in the DMR.

If ISU wins a lot of games, it will because the O gets the job done and the D manages to be serviceable. Thus, depth on O is every bit as important as depth on D.

Furthermore, if you consider how pass-happy Herman's O is ... the Cyclones still aren't quite as deep or talented at WR as I'm sure Rhoads and Herman would prefer.

If they told you that, then I have to believe it. If CPR thinks the offensive depth is lacking, I can't imagine what he must think about the defense... in particular the DE and LB positions? We basically have zero depth there.

Thanks for the compliments though Jon. I'm glad that you like the physical look of ARob, the WRs, and the OL. That is at least a good sign. I'd be concerned if we didn't at least look the part?

But the defense HAS to be the main concern with this team. It was one of the worst in the entire country last year, and we aren't really adding anything to it this year besides David Sims and hopefully Roosevelt Maggitt. The defense scares me to death.

I've always really liked ARob and think he deserves a great season. He's a guy that truly earned his way to the #1 spot. Between head coaching changes and taking a back seat to Hicks, Scales & Bass going into the last couple seasons, he's remained patient, stayed quiet and worked very hard. Now it's his time to shine baby!

We also add Taufoou, but we lost Michael Bibbs, Kurtis Taylor and Ernest Ferguson. I can't believe we weren't able to find some Juco players to play on the defensive line. We struck out on Taylor Martin, but I would have thought that more Juco players would have given us a look. Playing time is there to be had. The guys who are 4th and 5th on OU's depth chart could be starting at ISU. And it's not like you can't get to the NFL from ISU. Plenty of guys have done that.

All of the returning guys are going to have to step up their game. It's been done before (ISU in 2004) so I'm not going to give up on the season just yet.
