S.O.S. - Save Our Sewers?

Historic sewers? Public sewer visitor center?! You've got to be kidding me.

Well..........we are spending $700,000,000 on horses, so this is just a drop in the bucket. Here's a great way to avoid federal stipulations- don't accept the money, and they can't control you with idiotic demands.

If the option is to raise property or local option taxes, or accept federal money, which one do you think most people would choose?

It depends if it could be explained in a coherent fashion. If taking federal money means that the project is vastly more expensive, perhaps another option to raise funds may be needed. The problem there is that the federal government will still collect the same amount from us, and distribute it to someone else if we don't take it. They've kind of got us over a barrel by coercing us with our own money. Hard to fix the problem if you don't deal with the main problem (federal meddling in areas beyond their scope of power) first.

As a life long sewer worker, I think this is an excellent idea whose time has come. Like we say in the sewer, "time and tide wait for no man".

Sincerely,

Ed Norton

I read this article yesterday and it still boggles my mind. I'm a huge fan of historic preservation, but Des Moines sewers do not equate with Roman aquaducts. I sense a story for John Stossel...
