MLB: Jose Guillen goes off

Gotta appreicate an athelete who is being honest:

Guillen: `I suck’ and am `embarrassed by the money I’m making’ - Kansas City Star

When Royals outfielder José Guillen goes off, as he did Monday afternoon, he seldom minces words. That didn’t change simply because he chose to go off on the guy in the mirror.

“I hate making excuses,â€￾ he said. “If I suck, then I suck. And I suck. That’s the way I’m playing. If you suck, you suck. You have to take responsibility in this game. Right now, that’s the way I feel.

“Yes, I suck.â€￾

“I’m embarrassed by the money that I making,â€￾ Guillen said, “and playing the way I’ve been playing. I’ll swear that on my kids’ (lives). I feel very embarrassed.

“Sometimes, I feel I should take money out of my own pocket and buy tickets for every fan. Because you know what? For a $12 million man, these are not the numbers you should be expecting. I admit it. I’m not playing to my potential.â€￾

Know what would be more impressive? If he followed through and bought tickets for every fan. Or agreed to a pay cut. That would be more meaningful than admitting he's overpaid.
 
Until the Royals realize they can't become a winner by over-spending on middle-tier free agents they will always be terrible. The Pirates (my team) have done this for years up until the last two seasons. They are finally investing in the farm system and you can actually see progress. It might not hit the win/loss column this season but it will in the next two years.

The Florida Marlins are best at what they have to work with. They sell at the absolute height of a guys value for a ton of high ceiling prospects. They (the prospects) might be in the lower minor leagues instead of trading for "major league ready" talent.

I'm getting so sick of MLB because the bottom dozen or so teams have only a certain window of success. They need their homegrown talent to blossom at the same time and then get the one or two extra chips to make a playoff run. Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, etc. can spend big money on top-tier free agents and it won't kill them if that player busts. It's why the NFL is running laps around MLB...teams in Green Bay and Jacksonville are on the same playing field as teams in New York, Boston, and Chicago.

I would say the Twins are better than the Malrins at developing. Having said that, they don't get rid of the same number of guys at the same value, however they do compete almost perennially. They also haven't won a World Series recently as the Marlins have, however, they haven't had the lows and are once again in the hunt for a pennant with a very low payroll and guys they drafted and developed. Look at Carlos Silva. He is with my Mariners and he sucks, all while making 12.5 million. I would say the Twins did well getting rid of him.

I agree completely! 3 years for 12 MM for Guillen? Yet another brilliant move by Dayton Moore.

This argument might be valid for being in play-off contention on a consistent basis, but has been pretty soundly defeated for WS titles. How have those big payrolls paid off for the Yankees, Cubs, and Mets lately? Even your "lowly" Pirates have more WS titles (5) then the Cubs (2). Heck, the Red Sox only have 2 more titles (7) in the last 100 years and the Dodgers only have one more (6). The struggles of teams like the Pirates and the Royals are more based on missmanagement then payroll differential. Doesn't look like it is going to turn around any time soon with the Pirates continuing to shed their best and brightest stars for next to nothing (McLouth trade is still puzzling).

Yeah but with Guillen its all talk. Last year he would ***** out his teammates for the way they played.... then not hustle on ground balls, or run hard for balls in the outfield, etc.

I agree that the Twins (and even the Indians) do things the right way. The Twins are certainly more level in terms of peaks and valleys. I think the Marlins are on a different level because they have won a two World Series in the past dozen or so years. I'd rather the Cyclones suck for five years but on the sixth year have them win the National Championship. I think all teams should strive for winning it all. That's where the Marlins have become so successful.

Agreed. Talk is cheap. If he really meant it....he'd be giving some of his money back.Now that would be something.

So are you saying a team with a payroll of $70 million and a team with a payroll of $150 million are on the same playing field? You have so much more room for failure and misspending when you have money. You can purchase Dice K for $50 million, overspend on Jason Giambi or Carl Pavano, etc. The Pirates are in a bidding war right now for a 16 year old Dominican kid and will probably get priced out when it reaches $5 million. You can't tell me it's an even playing field. The mismanagement comes from the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets if they don't win the World Series.

As far as the McLouth trade...it's a great trade for the Pirates. They traded a .260 hitter with decent power and speed for a top of the rotation starter and high end prospect in AA. That is the type of deal the Pirates wouldn't have made three years ago. When you sell at a player's peak you get good return. They haven't done that until recently.

He pulled this crap last year and then didn't back it up afterwards. He's lazy, he doesn't hustle, he doesn't care. He's doing this for attention. If he truly cared, he would run out groundballs and hustle after flyballs instead of letting them drop right in front of his feet time after time after time.

Hozey, there's a reason Dayton Moore signed you. It's because he's an idiot and likes to throw a bunch of money at bums. Been to a handful of games this year and can assure you I won't get a dime back from my tickets from this hypocrite.

Why we signed a guy for $36 million that no contending team would EVER want is beyond me- especially after he just got caught roiding. Screw you Dayton......not only for this move but also for just being, well.....you. Everything you do makes no sense. Every guy you sign makes no sense (save for Soria, Meche). Every idiot coach you hire makes no sense (scouting the freakin' Japanese league for a manager? Are you serious?). Every trade you make makes no sense (trading away 2 cheap, young and talented relievers for a couple of mediocre veteran hitters with high salaries = just plain stupid). All in all Dayton, you just suck at life. Please go away. Thanks!

2008 - PHI - $98.3 (13th)
2007 - BOS - $155.4 (2nd)
2006 - STL - $88.9 (11th)
2005 - CWS - $75.2 (13th)
2004 - BOS - $125.2 (2nd)
2003 - FLA - $63.3 (20th)
2002 - LAA - $61.7 (15th)
2001 - ARI - $81.2 (8th)
2000 - NYY - $113.3 (1st)

Somehow teams in the bottom 2/3 of MLB (by payroll) have managed to win WS titles 5 out of the last 8 years (the last Octade, if you will :wink:). Also, the aforementioned overspending on busts like Giambi, Pavano, J. Wright, Sheffield and neglecting homegrown talent is exactly why the Yankees have failed to win a WS since 2000, despite having the largest payroll every single year (by a large margin).

On a side note, I'd gladly spend $50 mil on Dice-K and trade future superstars like H. Ramirez if it means two WS titles in 4 years. The value of the Red Sox franchise has more then doubled since they were purchased for $380 million in 2002 to $816 million and counting in 2008. That's a 214% increase in 6 years ($436 million). I'd call that pretty good managment.

It ain't the ticket prices that make a day at the park expensive.... its the $7 beers! Still love going to Royals games and I make 10 or more a year even though we have been god-awful the whole time I've lived in KC. Nothing quite like a Major League Baseball game.
