Hello. I'm new here. My family and I are looking into making the drive from KCMO to Ames for the ISU/OSU game in November. We plan to stay in town for the weekend and explore the campus a little and take in the atmosphere. I had a few questions for ISU fans...where would be good places to eat, stay and sightsee? Also, would you consider the atmosphere at ISU games to be family friendly? Our children are 1 and 7 years old. We figured on getting the hillside seating and staying towards the back. Thanks, in advance.

Thank you very much. I was just browsing through the replies in that thread. It seems like a nice, fun atmosphere for us to take in a game. Looking forward to it.

You will love Ames.

Might want to make your reservations early -- just in case our team starts blowing everyone away and all the naysayers decide they want to show up then. :)

Generally we'd like to think we're family friendly. Staying to the back of the hillside is a good idea anyway, especially if you want to watch some of the game.

With a young family, I'd stay away from Campustown/Welch Ave during the evening, but daytime (unless it's a day game) should be okay. Here's the URL for chamber/ convention and visitors bureau. Thanks for the great responses. I appreciate it. I was just checking out the link and it looks like the Reiman Gardens would be a great place to check out with the family.

Yea, especiallly if the butterfly room is still open. It was even really my cup of tea and I thought it was pretty cool.

Keeping small children away from bars near college campuses at night? psh :jimlad:

I can't wait for that game. I'm excited to see OSU's high powered offense in action (Im saying this now, but Im sure Ill regret it in a few months). The best part about having a poor season ahead is bringing in some good other teams/players to watch.

Between good teams Iowa and OSU, we also bring in Baylor's QB who should be fun to watch.

Finding some wins in there is just icing on the cake.

Plus you can't go wrong with OSU fans.

The OP is from KC. I suspect he/she will not be overly impressed by the BBQ in Ames.

Battle's is authentic Texas style barbeque. I suspect that someone from KC who presumably has a sophisticated bbq palate would appreciate it.

Also, we have an American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) award winning campus and as mentioned the butterfly house is a big hit with kids.

No disrespect was meant toward the Ames BBQ scene. I just know if I was going to Stillwater from Des Moines to watch a game and someone suggested a sweet corn restaurant to me....

Maxim Magazine just gave Hickory Park some props as the best BBQ around. That's saying something with all the great BBQ in DSM.

Are you trying to summon the ghost of Osoprimo?

For the love of God- this will be like the 18th thread hijacked by the never-ending Battles vs. Hickory Park debate... now it's my turn- I think Hickory Park blows Battles away, but most folks say Battles has better sandwiches. I myself love a place that serves beef ribs. Where else can you find that???
