We got our new puppy 2 weeks ago and she is now 7 weeks old. we have been working with her on going to the bathroom out side but it seems like we are not getting anywhere with her. she has gotten better on not just going to the bathroom every 5 minutes but she still wont go to the door and she still has accidents.

Any advice on how to get her to start telling us she needs to go? we have been chalking it up that she is really young but we are starting to get frustrated with her, I know it takes more than two weeks but would like to see some end in sight!
 
My thought is the puppy is pretty young. As a rule I thought you were not supposed to get a puppy until they were about 7-8 weeks old due to maturity issues.

Lots of treats and praise helps. You will have to be proactive about taking the dog outside. After the dog gets outside and goes potty, give lots of verbal praise and also a treat. The dog will eventually understand that this is wanted behavior. Eventually you can teach them to give you signs about going outside. Most of the time they will give you a sign on their own.
 
Do you really like your door?

We trained ours to paw at the door when she was younger. (now she just whines) I wouldn't limit it to just when she has to go. I'd make her do it any time you want to cross that threashold until she gets the hang of it.

some people have trained pups to bark, ring a bell or whatever.

It's just plain harder to train some dogs than others.

There is a lot that you can do. They make the puppy pads (floor diapers), which are great when you can't possibly go outside every 5 minutes. They seem to work pretty well, but the trick is to put the pad as close to the door as you can right away, and then progressively move it a little closer each day. (You should start at the spot that seems to be your puppy's favorite spot). Eventually you'll move the pad outside the door once they get that they need to get to the door.

Also, the rule of thumb for a puppy is to take them out after they eat, wake up, play, run around, and etc. Crating also really helps because they won't usually go where they sleep. (unless it's an emergency in which case they were left in the crate too long).

The key is consistency. It takes a while at first, (especially for as young of a puppy as you have). It's probably going to take you at least another month of work before the puppy really starts to get it, but even then there will be accidents as the puppy is still really young.

haven't read thru this thread to see if the answer has been given. Google kennel training for housebreaking dog, or something like that. get a kennel just big enough for the dog to turn around in, no more. dog won't go to the bathroom were it sleeps - great way to housetrain a dog - lots more on the web for specifics.
 
She is an English Sheppard and we do have a kenel.......sometimes she doesnt make it to the grass she just goes on the deck. when we put her in the grass she usually go, but then she comes in the house and she goes again!

The above is spot on.
Also, bigger, male dogs will tend to talk longer...especially if they aren't fixed.
The biggest key is training yourself to remember to take it out everytime it wakes or eats.
