MLB: Freel Traded to the Royals

That's one roster spot opened up, right?

Edit: I guess not, he was already designated for assignment and not on the 25 man.

He was being payed something like 5 mill a year for nothing. At least they dumped him and dont have to pay it all.

They designated him for assignment when they acquired Baker.

Side note: Does Hendry have any clue what he is doing right now?

Exactly.

Although to the credit, Jake Fox has been a pleasant surprise that I think has made them rethink things. At the beginning of the year I was thinking Fox was good trade bait, and still is, but seems to be one that might just be a keeper now.

And thus, the cycle is complete.

- Gathright is released by KC, and signed by the Cubs for the minimum.
- Cubs realize that he is useless, and send his *** to Baltimore for Ryan Freel. Upon arriving in Chicago, Freel calls it a "dream come true" to play for the Cubs and tells the equipment manager to burn his Baltimore equipment bag.
- Before his first game as a Cub, Freel is scratched from the line-up with a tight hamstring.
- Realizing that Freel is also worthless, the Cubs DFA him, and sign Jeff Baker from the Rockies.
- Cubs trade Freel to KC for next to nothing - which is what they got when they signed Gathright back in February.

*sigh*

The cycle will be complete once they cut Baker's worthless *** too and realize that was a pointless deal as well

A trade can't be worthless if you don't give up anything to get him.

Right, but the idea is that if they hadn't signed Gathright in the first place, none of what happened later would have happened.

They could have just re-signed Jim Edmonds and been done with it. Re-sign Edmonds, and letting go of DeRosa doesn't look so bad, as Fukudome could have slid over to right when Bradley was hurting early in the year.

I think people are ripping on Hendry for no reason on this move. Freel was a "low risk, medium reward" pick up. He costed the cubs nearly no money. Hendry took a chance and it didn't work out. Didn't exactly bite him in the ***.

Now the other moves he has made, I can't defend at all.

Trading for Baker was just stupid because he should be cut as well. They should have seen what it would take to get this guy from the Royals: Mark Teahen Stats, News, Photos - Kansas City Royals - ESPN He's a former outfielder turned infielder this year so he could be a cheaper version of Mark DeRosa. That and he's instantly be the leader on the Cubs in batting average amongst the regular starters...

partly true....
he is a former outfielder, turned infielder (3b), turned back to outfield when alex gordon started the 07 season in KC. now teahan is back to 3b while gordon rehabs. i also think he caught some in the minors and pitched a bit in college. kc will be stupid to let a man like him go but it sounds inevitable.

Which begs the question...where the hell is Edmonds at now? Out of baseball, which begs another question, why? I thought he contributed nicely last year. Steroids?

I am glad Freel is gone. I hope they can get rid of Miles for something too. Freel for no one at all is still not a bad deal for us.

I don't think resigning Edmonds would have helped but to say Hendry did not botch up the offseason is inacurate. Please name me 1 move that has worked out well so far besides all the guys we already had in the system that got called up a some point.

DeRosa traded for next to nothing: that turned out great once A-Ram went down
Bradley, 3 years $30 mil and already regretting that signing
Gaithright: worthless
Let Wood go and traded for Gregg: jury is still out on this one
Signed Miles for 2 years: big bust
Traded Marquis for Viscanio, dumped him and ate $4 mil in salary while Marquis is an All-Star with 10 wins right now.
Traded Olsen to Seattle for Heilman who has been terrible in the pen.
This isn't even factoring in the whole Gaithright for Freel for Nelson move.

Well, that really puts it into perspective. Almost every move has been the wrong one at this point.

I still defend trading DeRosa. We got 3 very solid prospects for him. Plus the only reason why everyone is complaing about it is because the worse possible thing happened. Aramis got hurt for a long period of time. Mark DeRosa is not Babe Ruth, like most Cubs fans make him out to be. He isn't even that good this year. A sub .800 OPS does not justify his god like stature here with most Cubs fans. I'm really getting sick of everyone wanting him back.

I get your point, but DeRosa's presence wasn't just about his numbers. It was about his flexibility, leadership, and willing to do whatever the team needed. He was the one guy that got hits in the playoffs last season.

Getting rid of DeRo was a bad move, no matter which way you look at it. If the "3 very solid prospects" turn out to be quality players, maybe the trade will be considered good. But, this team is built to win NOW. And they removed a player that could have helped them win now for three that MIGHT help win in the future. Questionable...
