In-State talent ?

cyismydog, kg, or I guess anyone... have you seen Will Artino play? What is your feeling on why ISU is not going after him? I assume it is because they are taking the risk that one of these bigger name guys will choose ISU.
Thanks.

He never said he was a bigger project than Hamilton. We all know Hamilton was a project. That doesn't mean we are looking to offer another project.

I am not questioning the decision not to offer, just trying to get a feel on why we didn't offer and what type of recruit he is. Is he like a Hamilton? More raw? Less raw? Athletic? Skilled? Strengths/weaknesses?

My bad.

Re Artino; 6'10" and largely rail thin is a long way from Hamilton. Will is not now, or likely ever, going to be a banger or shot blocking, rebounding juggernaut in the paint. He can step out to ~ 18 ft pretty good for his size and has a nice touch, but is that what we need? Will's game is still developing but I just don't see BCS conference in that game without being labeled as a longer term project. I wish the best for Will but as an ISU supporter I think we should continue to pass.

If there is one thing in which I blindly trust McD, it is in the evaluation and development of big men.
Exactly right. As for Artino, I would call him a poor man's Jamie Vanderbeken. Never bangs in the post, not a really physical guy. Hes pretty weak. But for being 6'10 he has a pretty good outside game. I dunno. I'd pass, but im not the one offering the schollies.

Hamilton has the frame to be a big bully down low. Artino doesn't project to be near as big.

Doesn't have the potential of Ham, to say the least...not going to ISU.

Artino is not a big XII player it pretty obvious. went to waukee and the kid is a legit 6'10" but is thin as a rail. 190 might be a generous guess. he only played about half the season after transfering from DM Christian, but from what i saw, he has a decent shot stepping out to about 17 ft. he can knock that shot down. doesnt really have much in the way of post moves at all, he just gets muscled out of the paint all the time so he just floats to the perimeter. it was really frustrating to watch. decent rebounder in HS but never really crashes the boards, just uses his superior length to get rebounds.

he'd be a nice piece for a mid-major and by the time he's an upperclassman, could be alright. the thing he needs to do is put on about 50 pounds lol. he has the frame.
