Does anyone know if Jake will be seeing time at Defensive End or D-Tackle. Does anyone know how he has been progressing? I remember when he was being recruited out of Valley, he was drawing interest from a number of schools. I hope he can be a key contributor for us this year and become that surprise D-Linemen we have been looking for. Best of luck to him...!

defensive tackle

I believe Kansas offered him and some others where coming on late

does he look pretty legit, i guess i dont know much about him

He has the size and hopefully he keeps some of the speed he had while at DE. I don't know how much he will play this year but I think he is going to have a great career at ISU before it is all said and done

well that is good, if he can develop those skills, hopefully he will be good, only time will tell then...

He does training at my high school for our varsity team he helps us out, he was talking about next season he said he was playing Defensive tackle, hes a big kid i dont think he has a ounce of fat on him pure muscle hes HUGE!

I honestly think the guy that is going to step on the d-line will be Maggitt because he is too legit, too legit to quit...

I'm honestly not too worried about our pass rush on the outside with Lyle (who looks way bigger than the 255 he is listed at) Parker, and Taylor Martin.

If Walter Woods plays as fast as he is cracked up to then I could see him playing quite a bit as a true freshman

I would like to see Woods redshirt unless he is just an absolute stud. We really need to start building depth for the future. I think we have enough talent on the DL to have a decent 2 deep. I'm excited about Woods future though. I wouldn't mind seeing us recruit larger LB's with plans to add 20-30lbs and putting them on the line. I think Knott could be a great LB, but I wouldn't be upset to see him move to DE.

The DE's aren't going to do us any good if we can't get a push in the middle with out DT's. Thats where..hopefully? McDonough could be a suprise? along with frere.

What does decent mean? We basically have the same DL as last year and I don't consider their production decent. DL is still the biggest Q on the team.

There. fixed that for ya...

...aside from the fact that we'll have redshirts and injured players back, which is hardly "the same unit"....

The entire D-line will make or break this season IMO.

If Lyle, Parker, Maggitt, Martin, or Laing can get pressure from the ends, and Frere, Rump, Alburtis, Black, Johnson, McDonough, etc can bring heat up the middle... it could mean a 6 win season IMO. If not, it could mean 2 wins again I'm afraid. Simple as that.

Well, just having most all of them back should allow for improvement. Schemes and techniques will be different too. Burnham talked during the spring about how they are teaching the interior guys to shoot gaps instead of take on the linemen and go to certain spots on the field. Same with the ends. Defense will be improved big time over last year, just based on the fact that we have a real defensive coordinator whose got a long, experienced history in high D1 programs as opposed to a bunch of inexperienced, young and unproven good ol' boys.

The collegefootballnews.com preview that was posted recently on here even says we should see sack production improve dramatically.

Now, I'm not expecting all of this, or even drinking much kool-aid, as I won't expect anything until I see a few games, but I am not as worried about our defense as a lot of other fans right now.

I think Chizik was WAY overrated as a defensive guru. He had the best talent in the country at Texas. Kinda hard to screw that up. Chizik's defense at ISU went backwards from year one to year two. I knew we didn't have the best talent, but I thought we'd at least see improvement from his first year to his second. Much of that falls on Bolt, but a lot of it falls on Chizik too.

I trust Wally Burnham more. I'm not saying our defense will be good, but I don't think we'll see the blatant lack of basic fundamentals like we did last year. That alone will help.

I expect nothing from Taylor Martin. His juco stats make me wonder how he even got an offer.

That is my concern as well. I don't know if he'll even show up? He didn't look very good in his videos IMO. I'll keep my fingers crossed though. I hope he proves us both wrong.

We desperately needed to recruit the DE position and we basically came up empty. That will hurt for a while.

At best he will provide depth. You don't get 11 tackles in a full season at a Juco and have an immediate impact at a B12 school.

11 tackles in a full JUCO season is pretty sad, just jumping on a pile once a game should be enough to get an assisted tackle or something. Plus, he decommitted from us for a period and of course received no other offers. That said, Martin for Heisman!
