Shocking answer!

But do you agree with Mr. Miller?

Scout.com: 6/1 Roundtable - The One Coach You'd Want

Well his reasoning is hard to argue, KF has done well in bowl games in the past when Iowa is not the most talented football team on the field. However if I had to pick one coach for one game, it would have to be: Paul Rhoads, he has never lost a football game as a HC.

Pete Carrol, KF, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer - all lost games last year.

Jon doesn't realize that he loses all credibility by giving the homer answer on a national website. People outside of Iowa will look at that answer and say two things...

1) Of course he does...
2) I hope the "one game" isn't against Iowa State.

Not a bad choice by Miller, but he made this selection because he is a homer, not because he has suddenly (and unespectedly) acquired a brain.

I would pick Pat Hill. Talk about doing more with less and game day effectiveness. And he is tougher than a $2 steak.

Two Big Ten titles, an undefeated Big Ten season, five January bowl games in the last seven years, something only four other programs can claim and those programs are among the blue bloods of the sport. Give me one game, give me equal talent, and give me Kirk Ferentz.

You have to give credit to Ferentz for the 2 big ten titles and the undefeated big ten season. However, the 5 January bowls is a weak argument. Sure he deserves credit for getting enough wins to make a bowl, but if you have a fan base willing to travel and a .500 team in the Big Ten, you are getting a January Bowl. So, the fact that Iowa has 5 January Bowls has little to do with Ferentz beyond achieving a winning season, and more to do with conference advantage and fan support.

I don't have to give him credit for anything but having a roster full of criminals. Where's DJK and Southernhawk - can't wait to hear them squawk.

He is good at developing players (especially offensive linemen), but the question is not to build a team. The question was for one game and he isn't the xo's type coach you would want in a one game scenario.

He is right, when KF has one game to win to get to a national championship (i.e. 2002) KF is an amazing coach. He can really spend a week preparing for a team.

I mean I realize that we hadn't used Seneca until the second half of that game :jimlad: but other than that he prepared perfectly for that game.

Ferentz would actually be up there on my list because I think if you give him the caliber of talent that a major college has he's demonstrated he can do more with less.

But, when considering this question here is the order of importance in my mind:

1. Bowl games, best parallel situation to the question at hand, imo.
2. Rivalries, next best parallel.
3. Regular season important games, ESPN Game Day/ major non-rival opponents.

Ferentz struggles in the latter two. Especially #2. He also has yet to win on the road against Ohio State or Michigan St.

So, not so fast, Miller...imo.

I also thought Deace's answer was weak on today's show. We all know Tressel's bowl failures.

Not sure who my coach would be yet. Hard not to say Urban Meyer. Trying to think if I can reason around him.

Exactly. His record against ISU speaks for itself when he brings a more talent rich team to that game every year and fails to win quite a bit. I can't really remember the last time that Iowa really executed the X & O's better against Iowa State since Fry left.

here's the problem with this argument....That game is ISU's SuperBowl. Iowa is more worried about Big 10 play and January bowl games. :jimlad:

Actually, Jon doesn't really care so much what others think about him ;)

It's my opinion. You can agree, or disagree. It's all good.

The way Jon kept raising his voice, even managing the rare feat of interrupting Deace, made his argument much more emotional and homeriffic than reasonable. The arguments against Ferentz spoke volumes compared to the ones for him.
