Cubs call up Jake Fox and two others, send down Bobby Scales and Neal Cotts, put Aaron Miles on DL | Hardball

In a shake up of their roster, the Cubs made three moves today to help their lineup and their pen.
Jake Fox, who is hitting .423 with 17 home runs and 50 runs batted in for Triple-A Iowa over 40 games, was called up. Joining the infielder from Iowa is shortstop Andres Blanco and left-handed reliever Jason Waddell. Blanco is hitting .314 with 4 home runs and 25 RBI. Waddell has made 18 appearances for Iowa and has a 5.40 earned-run average.
To make room for Fox, Blanco and Waddell, the Cubs put Aaron Miles on the 15-day disabled list and sent down fan-favorite Bobby Scales and lefty reliever Neal Cotts, who has struggled to get out left-handed batters this season.

Can't believe how much this team improved today. Getting rid of Cotts and Miles is huge. Hopefully Fox can come in and provide a boost to the offense.

Not sure why Bobby Scales was sent down. I thought he was playing well. I'm guessing because they needed a backup shortstop and he can't play SS.

I know I said the Cubs only had 3 lefties (Lilly, Marshall, and Cotts) on their 40-man roster...what I did not realize was there was only 36 players on that roster. With today’s additions the 40-man now has 38 players on it. They should probably have Mathes on the 40-man as well...he has been doing well down at Iowa.

The Bull pen has really been lacking so far this year. Ramirez being hurt seems to have really hurt as well.

I still like the makeup of this team, but we just don't seem to have the same chemistry as we did last year.

Still it's early and despite the losing steak, we're not that far out.

Fox batting .423 over 40 games is amazing...he deserves a shot.

I'm confused about Scales...I thought he was doing a decent job at 3rd and his offense was above average as well.

I'm pretty sure Scales was sent down because he is still sick. Sucks for him but we can't waste a roster spot for someone who can't even play. Hopefully he will be back up once he spends 10 days in the minors.

The call up is well deserved for Fox. That guy was straight raking in Des Moines. Scales was sent down purely because he's not a SS. Blanco can probably contribute as much as Miles. It really makes you miss Ronny Cedeno. Cotts has been a bust with the Cubs.

If any of you watched Baseball Tonight last night, Kurkjian said he expects Hendry to start making some moves, BIG MOVES. This team could use a shake up.

What's he ill with? Seemed like a decent ball player the few times I saw him play.

Oh yeh, forgot about him being sick. He will be back in 10 days.

Yes...Lou did mention yesterday that while D Lee had goten much better with his illness, Scales had gotten much worse. Plus with Miles out, that leaves no backup to Theriot at short.

big moves are needed. there are guys out there that could really help this team... can we get them though? who knows. hendry needs to go out and shake it up

It's about time!!! I like the Cotts is finely out of the pen now too. Waddell can't be any worse. I'm guessing Scales will be back up once he's healthy and Blanco will go back down.

The question now is do they actually give Fox some at bats? Hoffpauier has been playing for Lee and Bradley lately, even played in LF to give Soriano a rest, when Lee is back do they use Fox like they have with Hoffpauier and Micah gets AB taken away? Right now I'd like to find a way to have both Fox and Hoffpauier in the lineup as much as possible and see if either can get on a roll with regular playing time.

Wonder how much Fox plays. Also kinda wondering with the earlier comments if this isn't a little bit of a showcase for Fox in hopes of trading him to an AL team so that he can DH.

Trades coming?
8 Losses in a Row? Is a Trade Coming?

With their 8th loss in a row now in the books panic is starting to creep into the Cubs clubhouse. While all involved agree that the Cubs have a lot of talent on the roster it is also evident that this is a team that has some glaring weaknesses.
First, defensively they are less than adequate. They have no legitimate, everday 2nd baseman on a championship level club. They are trying to fill in at 3rd with either a player who is too short to play the position (Fontenot and Miles), a player who the Baltimore Orioles so wanted to get rid of that Andy MacPhail is paying ALL of Ryan Freel's salary, or a player who as of a month ago had never played in the big leagues - Bobby Scales.
The bullpen is a huge problem as the Cubs really have only 1 lockdown reliever in Carlos Marmol, a youngster who is getting better in Angel Guzman, and very mediocre pitchers in setup man Aaron Heilman and closer Kevin Gregg. Neal Cotts does not belong on this team nor does David Patton who may be solid down the road but currently is far too inexperienced to be forced to help a subpar bullpen.
While much of the trade talk in the media has centered on Jake Peavy who wants to pitch for the Cubs the prudent thing to do would be to add a bat and at least one bullpen arm. I wonder what it would take to re-acquire Mark DeRosa and struggling closer Kerry Wood from Cleveland who is in last place in the AL Central.
DeRosa gives you another bat, a clubhouse presence and something that the Cubs sorely need, a 3rd baseman until Aramis Ramirez comes back. Wood, while he has had his struggles returns to a more comfortable setting and could give the club a shot in the arm and change the locker room dynamic.
Major League sources tell me that GM Jim Hendry is desperately looking to add a hitter and is calling around both leagues with a real sense of urgency. Oakland's Matt Holliday is available but he is a LF so if you add him that means that Alfonso Soriano must move to 2nd base and that would weaken an already suspect Cubs defense.
I would call Texas and see if I could add SS Omar Vizquel and I would move Ryan Theriot to 2b where he could be an all star. Vizquel improves the team's defense and that should help relax the pitching staff. Then I would call Cleveland and beg them to trade me DeRosa.
Two other names that are rumored to interest Hendry are the Florida Marlins Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu. Both are excellent hitters but Cantu has had his struggles at both 2b and 3b before moving to 1b this season. Uggla is coming off of back to back excellent offensive season with 30+ HR's in 2008 but he is hitting just .205 so far in 09'.
Whatever Hendry does it is sure to be interesting over the next couple of weeks but whatever he does he better do it quickly before his team's season slips away.

I used to like Kaplan a lot but I think he is a giant ****** bag right now. If anyone has seen Chicago Tribune Live, you would know what I'm talking about.

I have children named Micah & Jake, both of whom were at a spring training game when Hoffpauier & Fox went back-to-back versus the Mariners in March!

I've been off the DLee bandwagon for a year and a half and whining to my Cub fan buddies it was such a pity we had two good 1st basemen rotting away down at AAA. I'm with you!!!
