Linebacker depth and progression

We desperately need LBs and DEs in this next recruiting class.

I can't believe that Jesse Smith, Josh Raven, Fred Garrin, and Derec Schmidgall are all seniors. Add to that the departure of Ernest Ferguson and Cameron Bell.... and we are in a world of hurt.

Taufou, Klein, Jackson, and Knott may HAVE to play this year just to get some game experience under their belts for next year when they will HAVE to start.

I'd have to think that the coaching staff might be looking at playing more of a 4-2-5 scheme? We have a lot more D-back type guys than LBs right now. In fact, both Hamlin and Matthews are not Big 12 sized LBs whatsoever... so maybe they will be more of a LB/Safety type combo roaming player? Would make sense in defending the spread offenses of the Big 12 anyway?
If Knott plays alot this year then we are in trouble IMO.

The linebackers are truly going to be a let the best man play sort of thing. The returning roster is quite thin, so don't at all be surprised to see guys like Jackson or Klein or Toufoou getting meaningful playing time.

Why wouldn't we want Knott, or any of the new linebackers to get alot of experience? I really think Knott can contribute this year in some way or another. FYI, he qualified for long jump with a 20-09. Quite a jump for someone that big.

Tafoou, Klein, and Jackson will see the field before Knott. I am guessing Knott redshirts.

Taufou better see the field first... isn't he a JUCO? How many years of eligibility will he have anyway?

If thats what you think of Smith, Honestly, what did u think of Ace bowen? he probably made more tackles chasing guys down than does/did smith.

Look out here comes DJK to thread steal over to a Hawk/Cyclone debate.....

all kiddin aside, the LB position needs a talent upgrade big time. Everyone talks about Jesse and he's worked hard to be where he's at, but, watching him play and yes he's in on a lot of tackles but many of them come downfield chasing the play.....i would rather our MLB is stuffing someone at the line!!!!!

Especially in the Big 12 and the pass happy offenses, having quick LB is a must.....gotta have speed to cover the field.

amount of playing time this year for those for would go in this order....

Tafoou - proven himself at the juco level
Knott - most big XII ready body of the freshman LB's
Jackson - most athletic of the 3 freshman, but a little raw and needs to get bigger
Klein - just not as athletic as the others.. can see him being a contributer in a few years, but not now.

...just my opinion though.

Exactly correct if you switch Knott and Klein around. Also my opinion.

just curious what your argument is for that? because Knott is bigger, faster, stronger....

...anyway you spin, it just shows that our LB's are bad when we are discussing not if the freshman will get PT but how much lol

Just from footage I have watched. I could be completely wrong, but thats the way I feel it will turn out..

Klein will be a bigger contributer then Knott sorry to say. I'd like to see both but IMO knott it will take a bit longer to get use to big 12 play

Agree with your assessment. Klein Now is 6'2"and 232#. Comes from a program that knows how to work hard, teaches how to be successful (Two state championships) and excells in the classroom. Has the size, speed and football kwowledge to contribute soon.

How do you know how fast, how strong or the size these guys are. If you noticed on the sidelines at the spring game that knotts height is overrated, Kleins is the same if not taller. If you notice, Knotts lifts on facebook are momentum lifts and not pure strength lifts. Check them out. Klein is ready to contribute where available

Running the 4-2 is an interesting choice. I have to admit, I have not paid too much attention to our D-line, but if we can put 4 guys on the line that can put some pressure on the QB, as well as gum up the O-line, we free up the 2 LBs left to make some plays and be free to flow sideline to sideline. Having 5 DBs give us some ability to create some messes in the secondary.

This could work against a passing offense, but creates some opportunities for a good offense to run off tackle all day long. If you are going to run a 4-2, you'd better have and D-line that can handle it.

There are a lot of things for both players that could happen in their career. I hope both have outstanding careers but you never know. I think Knott will be a solid starter in 2-3 years. Not now. I feel Klein has a lot more potential. Just my opinion..

well im a little over 6'2" and standing next to knott im about an inch shorter so his height it legit, perhaps klein's listed height was old and he grown since. who knows

what i know is these are both 2 tough kids who know how to play the game and play phyiscal. they are both strong and i think will bring some more toughness to our defense. its just my personal opinion that Knott is more ready. i watched the kid play about 30 times the last 3 years and it was a rarity to see anyone making more plays than him.

Totally agree with all of it except the Knott part. I just think he will need a little more time to develop. But im no expert. You could very well turn out to be right.
