Nate Gallick coming back to ISU

Welcome home Nate! -- this is great news and an indication that KJ will be putting together a fine staff.

I was wondering about who Jackson will be bringing in as assistants. This is a good pick, but in the story says he will be a "volunteer assistant". Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean?

Also, has anyone else heard anything about any other assistants? A lot of people would like to see the Paulson twins come back as assistants, but for those who know wrestling way more than I do (I'm a big fan, just not that knowledgeable about the inner workings), why is that a good idea?

Thanks.

what does it mean that they are putting together an Olympic Training Site?

"Chris was good about letting me travel and train, but I don’t think I was being fair to the team or myself. I was in Russia preparing to compete, and I was worrying about our guys as they prepared to wrestle Oklahoma."

Welcome back Nate! I was wondering why you left an asst. coaching position to return to ISU as a 'Volunteer Asst', but I understand now, you are training for the olympics - good luck and welcome back!

I believe if the Paulson's came back it would be in a similar role to Nate Gallick. Both are very active in competition and their main focus would probably be on training. KJ will need some full time assistants that can help focus on administration, recruiting, practices, etc. on a full time basis.

This olympic training site can really put ISU into a great position. I thought it was a great idea when KJ mentioned it at the press conference. Does anyone know where it might be located at in town, or is it going to be using what ISU does?

I wouldn't hold my breath on this. Every new coach hire at a decent wrestling school over the past few years has claimed there's going to be an Olympic training site at their school.

I'll believe it when I see it. I think it's mostly idle chatter.

The difference is that our coach was recently the head olympic coach for the past eight years.

College wrestling teams are allowed 2 full time assistants and 1 volunteer assistant coach. The "volunteer" part is somewhat disingenuous. Nate will still be paid a salary but it will be through working wrestling camps. It won't be as much as the 2 full timers make, however.

Teams also generally have a conditioning coach but their contact with the wrestlers is a bit more limited than the official coaches. They are not allowed in the corner at dual meets.

There are also administrative positions with further limited contact with wrestlers in actual practice. I think we've had 1-2 of these in the past and I think that will continue but to what level, I do not know.

Basically we have 2 more assistants and a strength coach yet to be named. The 2 assistant hires are huge because they, along with the head coach, are the off-campus recruiters.

And he resigned from that job under pressure. That doesn't exactly put ISU in a better position than other schools.

Don't be a hater, Spoon. Right now there's no evidence either way.

I'm still signing up for season tickets when they come round.

Nate has been running some of the workouts since the day Jackson was hired. Not really breaking news here.

From the article:
"Gallick said Iowa State is putting together an Olympic training site with a full-time coach funded through USA Wrestling. He said as a volunteer assistant he will have fewer responsibilities and more time to train."

Gallick seems to think there's some traction to it.

Jackson was the USA coach for quite a while. He's one of the most decorated international wrestlers in USA wrestling history. I'd say we have a leg up on other schools in this instance.

Like I said, I've read the claims. My only point is that I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't think that gives us a leg up on anyone. Being ISU will give us a leg up on some schools but there's not a chance they are just going to magically open one of these in Ames but no where else, and there are other schools who have international talent working out in their rooms already.

I don't see how anybody can say having Kevin Jackson in the room doesn't give us a leg up when it comes to kids who want to wrestle internationally. I watched the replay of the National Championship last night. Guess who was in the corner of both Paulson's as they won their divisions? Who was in Cael's corner when he won gold? Who, in this country, has more experience than him when it comes to freestyle? I don't think every top recruit will be begging to come to ISU, but to pooh-pooh him like he has no pull whatsoever seems silly.

I'm also not sure how anybody can question his connections when it comes to setting up one of these things. Somebody said he was shoved out the door. Do you think all the friends he's made over the years are going to blackball him because he's no longer the national coach? Do you think when it comes to deciding between two locations that having Jackson isn't going to tilt the field in our direction? Pretty doubtful.

And guess where the personal coach of our only gold medal winner from the '08 Olympics coaches? It's not ISU. What school already has 3 of the 7 2008 Olympic team members training and coaching there? It's not ISU. This school has a former gold medalist as the head coach there, too. Oh, and they've won the past 2 NCAA championships and will be favored to win a 3rd next spring.

Who has the "leg up" and can "tilt the field" in that 2 school comparison? The place where these guys are all at has talked about doing the OTC thing there, too. Nothing has materialized.

Look, I'm coming off as a real downer here and I don't mean to be. I fully admit to playing devil's advocate.

But back to the original point--Several schools are talking about this sort of arrangement. Nothing is happening. I will believe it when I see it--here or anywhere else. Would we be a good candidate for one if they do happen? Sure. We are Iowa State. I just doubt we are at the top of the list so I'm just not going to hold my breath.

To be brutally honest, I don't think USA Wrestling has the resources to make satellite training centers viable, anyway.

I know you disagree, but if I'm a kid who aspires to move on to international freestyle wrestling and I have to choose between Jackson and Brands, Jackson wins hands down. The experience isn't even close. Brands had a great career, and he did coach the one gold medalist we had last Olympics, but compare his experience to Jackson's and Jackson stands out head and shoulders. Both as a competitor and coach.

Jackson hasn't done anything as a college coach yet, but internationally he is a dominant figure.
