So, this is just as much a general question as it is a white sox one, but what's up with the scheduling of the white sox starting 5 right now?

Starting last wednesday thru this monday, we'll have
contreras
danks
colon
floyd
buerlhe
contreras
I'm a huge baseball fan, but don't pretend to be an expert when it comes to pitching. I get some stuff, but am befuddled by other stuff.
We had an off day last tuesday - did we just skip a starter to keep on our current 4 days rest? and then flip a couple guys?
How important do managers feel it is to get #1 starters matched up - etc? For instance, we'll have contreras matched up against Halladay on Monday - which sucks big donkey balls. How often to managers switch up rotations just to avoid specific matchups like that, etc. Obviously keeping pitchers on a normal schedule has some rationale...and I know managers use rest days to get creative or reallign rotations.
What about mixing up your lefty and righty pitchers in your rotation? Or pitching two lefties back to back? Are there common practices, or no-nos?
So, I guess, how about somebody with some knoweldge write a "pitching scheduling for dummies" paragraph or two for me?
