Cael did NOT underachieve

Wayne won less and less every year he was here - each year under his coaching (and each year removed from LE), we had a worse record. You can argue the same thing about GMac, but I don't think anyone can say Wayne was taking the program forwards.

I guess when you split hairs, then it is in the eye of the beholder. Because some would take the 19 wins and making the round of 32 his second year over the 20 wins and the NIT final four his first year.

Since when is going from a 7-9 conference record and the NIT to a 9-7 conference record and the NCAA the next year a step backward? I'll just file it under all of the other mis-information/lies I've seen about Morgan on this board. Seriously, continuing to call Morgan a lousy coach in light of what we've seen under GMac the last few years is truly bazaar.

Until Cael Sanderson decided to go to Penn State he wasn't underachieving in the minds of anyone on this board. In fact many considered him to be the second coming. The minute Cael packs his bags people start claiming that he underachieved.

Spot on alaskaguy. Suddenly people forget that Cael had a rebuilding job to do. His first 2 years the squad was extremely young and even this year's 10 starters were all underclassmen, yet he wins 3 conference titles and finishes 5,3 and 2 nationally in just 3 years, with a good shot at the national title next year. This underachieving crap is based on losing some very close matches and tournaments to Iowa, and Iowa has basically been able to combine the best wrestlers from two schools the last couple of years. I believe Cael made great progress his first 3 years and we were on track to win some national titles.

Um, yes, 9-7 and the NIT is a step backwards from 9-7 and the second round of the NCAA the year before. That's actually the definition of it.

Anjie-You've got it turned around. We went 7-9 and the NIT final 4 in Morgan's first year. We went 9-7 and the NCAA 2nd round in Morgan's 2nd year. That's a step forward.

I apologize - I was thinking of his third year here, which should have been his best if he were "improving" the team as you said (since he'd had some time to put his players/system in place), when his conference record was 6-10 and no post-season.

Anjie- In his 3rd year he lost one of the best centers in the big 12 (Homan) and a darn good #4 in Staple, and had to replace them with first year players. Very difficult to overcome the loss of those two with new guys so a step back was very realistic to anybody who took a good look at our situation. Now in his 4th year he would have had the entire team returning with the addition of DeGand, Stinnet and Westbrook, and like Stinson said in the paper last week, he could only imagine how good that team might have been. Taggart and Hubalek would have had a year under their belt to go along with Stinson, Blaylock and Clark. No doubt in my mind that team would have been back in the NCAA as they were two years earlier.

Oh, so losing his best players works as an excuse for Morgan but not McDermott? Or for JP losing a good coach in Cael. Hunh. That isn't hypocritical at all.

And it's funny that you give that much credit to Stinson and Blaylock, since that supreme talent hasn't translated to much at the pro level.

Anjie-All coaches lose some players, whether it's GMac or Morgan. Some coaches still win (Morgan 3 winning seasons, 4 post season wins, and 4 wins over top 8 teams, GMac none of the above). Not excuses, just facts. And the fact that Morgan did those things with no pro level players on his teams should make you realize he was really a pretty good coach.

well, it is VERY well known that college talent doesn't often translate into pro talent, so I wouldn't argue that point to far.

Wonder how long it will take Greg to get to 6-10 and no post season again?

Can he do it next year! at least that would show improvement/

I disagree. I'm sure I'm like a lot of ISU fans who only casually care about wrestling. That said, I definitely took note at how Cael's teams couldn't beat Iowa, but heck, it was wrestling. (i.e... I'm already spending too much time & energy worrying and commenting on FB and BB, I do have a real life to lead, so I'll let others worry about carrying that banner. )

Now that he is bailing, we now have the motivation to speak up on what we were previously thinking all along. This is what the silent majority does when pushed hard enough. You can only be quiet so long.

Ya, he was on track to win some national titles and just what did he do cykofan? He took off! And you want us to pat him on the back and thank him for being a distant second coach in the state???

Talk about twisting things...you should have listed his teams' national finishes at 2,5, and 3 instead of making it look like they have gotten better each year (and thus closer to a national title)
