Why even weigh-in?

For a MMA contest Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos weighed in at 152 pounds when the weight limit was 145 pounds. At the time of the match she reportedly weighed 158 pounds.

What a farce.

The point of this particular event was that Santos was considerably over the weight limit at the weigh-in and yet the match still happened.

This isn't new. A lot of times what ends up happening is that a bigger share of the prize money than before go to the other person.

Most fighters walk into the ring/octagon at 10-20 lbs more than their respective weight class.

It happens in Boxing too, notably Corrales/Castillo 2 a few years ago.

That does seem kinda odd/pointless.

Yeah she was clearly bigger than the Japanese fighter. It was basically an unfair fight. I could understand if she missed wieght by a pound but when she only gained 6 extra pounds after weighing in that just mean she did not even try to lose weight. Even women can lose more than 6 pounds of water weight.

Most of the sactioning bodies in boxing also give the other fighter the option to opt out of the fight if the opponent does not make weight. To keep the matches going as scheduled they usually offer the fighter more money or a larger share of the purse.
