The End of the Hippie Era

Fifty years ago this morning, Los Angeles and the world awoke to the news of five particularly grisly slayings. Charles Manson had sent his disciples to 10050 Cielo Drive, where they slaughtered Sharon Tate and four others, in an attempt to start a race war. The next night two more died.

These and other events, including the riots of 1968, marked the end of the flower power era. Peace, love, and dope still abounded, but somehow the country was losing its innocence, and its era of good feelings.

Starting this thread occurred to me for a couple reasons.....first, the wonderful Woodstock thread that @cyclones500 started, and the release of Quentin Tarantino's new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which is set at that very time.

I have read and watched a great deal of information about Manson and his followers. Although nowadays we have so many people doing crazy things, back in 1969 the idea that someone could exert a spell over so many people, including getting them to kill innocent, unknown people simply because they were commanded to do so was a truly frightening concept. Manson is dead, but his legacy lives on.

Will McDonald, the next Matt Blair?

Will McDonald and Matt Blair?

After some consideration, I find myself forced (forced, I tell you!) to be the first to make this comparison in total earnestness. Will McDonald’s shift to linebacker, his sheer athleticism, feel for the game, reputation as a “freak”? It all fits!

Yep, I know, I’m old compared to some of you young whippersnappers. But my own real exposure to Matt Blair came when he was in his prime as a Minnesota’s Viking, making multiple Pro Bowls, making big plays all over the field, and setting records blocking kicks.

His reputation as an athletic freak came well before that, though. Part of the Matt Blair mythos at ISU is that he could place a quarter on top of a backboard. Seriously.

I have no idea whether that’s true or not—though I do have a friend who played basketball with Matt. As I recall, in games before the Cyclone varsity took the court.

I’ll mention that at one Spring Game, I glanced over and realized I was sitting a few feet away from Matt in the stands. Long retired then, he must have been in his forties—but in a tank and shorts, sprawled in the sun, looked like he could still go down on the field and kick some serious college kid ***.

Now, Will McDonald’s prep athletic successes, including starring in basketball and excelling in both the discus and high jump in track, are well documented on this site.

But the comparison goes deeper than sheer athleticism. With the switch, Will McDonald now plays the same position that Matt did as a pro. Even more, though the roster lists Will at 6’4” 230, he apparently claims to be 6’4 225 at the moment. Matt was listed as a pro at 6’5” 229. Yeah, that was a different day for football (both of Minnesota’s starting tackles, one a future HOF’er, were listed at 6’6” 255).

And the comparisons just keep coming. I’ve heard old timers (older than me) talk about how Matt was a total disruptor on the field as a Cyclone. That’s exactly how the staff is starting to about Will nowadays. All the things he can do, how fast he learns, how he’s a natural.

So, is Will McDonald going to be another Matt Blair? Only time will tell...but that time is very close.

Hey, somebody ask Will to put a quarter on top of a blackboard? And while you’re at it, get Matt down here to meet the kid!

OTN this week ... Woodstock

Coming this week for "On That Note."

“Woodstock 50” is officially toast. Regardless, we're approaching a major pop-music milestone, the 50th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, which took place Aug.15-18, 1969.

Think of your favorite songs by artists that performed at “3 Days of Peace & Music.” It isn't limited to songs played at the festival, although notable sound/video clips from the show are a bonus.

Reminder: PLEASE DO NOT POST CHOICES IN THIS THREAD. We'll launch the official thread late Tuesday (8/6).

Tips on Buying a Smoker for a novice?

I had some smoked meat tonight that was really good that all of my kids actually liked too. So I have decided to buy a smoker. However, after a brief look at them, it is a little more intimidating that buying a grill. Any tips/advice for someone who doesn't know what they're doing? I'd prefer to get something that is pretty easy to put together, not a whole bunch of work, etc.

Homemade Bacon Question

Hey fellow smoker I need some advice . Making my first attempt at homemade bacon and ran unto a schedule issue. I put the belly in brine last Sunday afternoon. Was originally going to let set a week, Dry for a day to get a pellicle. and then smoke it.

We ended up having to travel out of state this weekend so my options are.

1.Smoke it Friday after being in brine for 4 days with little time to dry or form pellicle.
2. Leave it in brine for 8 days, then dry and smoke.
3. Leave it in brine for 5 days. Let dry (unattended) for 2.5 days and then smoke.

I think I have plenty of curing salt in the brine so I'm not terribly worried about it going bad in any case. Just curious if there are known pros and cons th any of the 3 options.

The OA (Netflix Series)

Anyone else watch the Netflix series The OA? I burned through in the last few weeks. The concept is a blind woman who has been missing for 7 years reappears under strange circumstance. The show is really hard to explain but the production value is very high and if you are able to suspend disbelief a little bit and enjoy surreal stuff I'd check it out.

PGI Fireworks Convention Gillette, WY

If any of you out there are within driving distance of this, I would reccomend going. The convention is from August 10th-16th with shows the 11th 13th 14th and 16th.

Last year it was in mason city and I went to two of the shows, including the saturday show. Living in small town iowa I dont get to see awesome firework displays too often.

Well worth the cost of admission.

Make sure if spots are reserved you get a seat as high as possible as you will be wrenching your neck no matter what and a high seat will help some. If you can get a seat on the ground and have an anti-gravity reclining chair, that would probably be best.

Also, take hearing protection as some of the displays are crazy loud.

Also, hopefully the fireball dudes will make an appearance.

Skip to 1:25 for the fireball. Watch the whole thing to see what it was made of.

Edit: read the article, the fireball dudes will be there with their "supernuke" made with over 1000 gallons of gasoline. The "supernuke" in the video attached was 650 only gallons. It will be in the show on the 14th.

Best Man Speech

My best buddy since I was born is getting married this weekend and I need to come up with a Best Man Speech.

I have a few ideas written down of stories/anecdotes but wasn't seeing if anybody had any tips, good one liners, etc.

Keeping the speech short is the plan.. Thanks!

Would you take this guy on our team

I am not sure. From a public image standpoint. It would be a red flag. However, the jury basically said it was pretty clear he was not guilty. Surprised Wisconsin kicked him off the team and out of school without due process. Had some really good offers out of high school like Miami and G Tech.
